Super Bowl Champions Slam Jaguars’ Usage of Travis Hunter

The Jacksonville Jaguars red-hot start to the season has come to a screeching halt as their usage of Travis Hunter is mind-blowing.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars trailing the Los Angeles Rams, 21-0, at halftime, the team’s usage of dual-threat WR/DB Travis Hunter has been questioned. Jacksonville got off to a red-hot 4-1 start, which included wins over the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs.

Now, they’re being embarrassed at their second home stadium in London as the Jags are questioning everything.

Ryan Clark and Richard Sherman Put The Jaguars on Blast for Usage of Travis Hunter

One of the main reasons Jacksonville used its No. 2 overall pick on Hunter was the fact that he played on both sides of the ball. If his Heisman-winning season wasn’t good enough, his numbers at Colorado spoke for themselves.

Hunter won the Lott Trophy, Fred Biletnikoff, Chuck Bednarik, and Walter Camp Awards, along with being named AP and SN College Football Player of the Year.

Clearly, the talent is there. After his first half in London, one would question if he was picked No. 2 overall or was a Day 2 selection. It’s not all Hunter’s fault, but his transition to the NFL hasn’t gone as planned. HC Liam Coen was met with harsh criticism as the Jaguars are trending in the wrong direction after such a strong start.

“Is Travis Hunter just a receiver now? What’s the deal? That’s not it man!” Ryan Clark said. “And he needs to be used more like a utility offensive weapon than a true wide out. Just get it in his hands. He can’t give you the entire route tree at this stage.”

At the end of the first half, Hunter was targeted three times. He didn’t have a single catch, and didn’t record a single defensive statistic. Through the first six games, Hunter had 20 receptions and 15 tackles. In PFSN’s WR Impact Metric, he received a D grade. His snap usage is still being figured out, but Richard Sherman added his two cents.

“I’ve said this since they first announced he was going to be WR and part time CB. It never made sense because he can make the same impact on offense with less plays. You have to stay in on Defense to get a rhythm. But it seems the Jags are hell bent on probing they know best,” Sherman said.

After hearing what Sherman had to say, it’ll be interesting to see if the Jaguars listen to the noise. Sherman and Clark aren’t the first people to slam them for their usage of Hunter, and they certainly won’t be the last. If Jacksonville wants to get back on track, the 2024 Heisman winner will need to be an integral part of their game plan.
