With all eyes on the Cleveland Browns quarterback room, this Browns insider provided a major update as to whether or not QB Shedeur Sanders will start this season. The Browns QB room has been chaotic, to say the least. They began the season with veteran QB Joe Flacco, someone they quickly moved on from. In fact, they traded him to their divisional rival, the Cincinnati Bengals.
While they didn’t get much in return for Flacco, it allowed for rookie QB Dillon Gabriel to start. He’s shown promise, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement. After Flacco was traded, Sanders moved up to QB2 in the depth chart. Now, this Insider dropped additional insight as to when the team’s fifth-round pick could surpass their third-rounder.
Browns Insider Sheds Light on Shedeur Sanders’ Chances of Starting This Season
Plenty of the talk around the league has been centered around Sanders. While many thought he was going to be a first-round pick, he ended up falling to Cleveland in the fifth. Sanders had a chance to go to Baltimore, but he turned down the opportunity to backup MVP winning QB Lamar Jackson.
While he could’ve started in Baltimore by now due to Jackson’s injury, Cabot believes his time is coming.
“Sanders has been working on every aspect of his game, from throwing out of the shotgun and under center, to play-action, to his footwork and everything else to be prepared to play when his number is called. He’s also worked on RPOs, keepers, and other QB movement skills because those are a big part of the Browns offense.”
“Myles Garrett also revealed recently that he sees Sanders working with Kevin Stefanski in his office in the early morning hours, which means he’s putting in the extra work,” Caobot added. “It’s showing up on the practice field, and the Browns are eager to see what he can do this season when the time comes.”
For seemingly the first time this season, a Browns insider has released a positive update in regard to Sanders’ chances as a starter, “The Browns will give Dillon Gabriel a decent on-ramp, but there will probably come a time in the second half of the season where the Browns will want to see Sanders play. They’re confident he’ll be ready.”
At this point, it’s clear that Cleveland is still going to ride Gabriel. The Oregon graduate has received an F thus far, according to PFSN’s QB Impact Metric. That’s not to say he’s a bad quarterback, but it sheds light on how hard it is to play at this level. Sanders had a few opportunities in the preseason, but Cabot’s update makes it seem like he’ll be starting for the Browns by the end of the season.
