What Happened to Joe Burrow and Jake Browning? A Look at the Bengals’ Revolving Door of QBs and Joe Flacco Trade

The Cincinnati Bengals lost Joe Burrow and benched Jake Browning, and they're now ready tro roll with Joe Flacco

Two months ago, the Cincinnati Bengals talked about a deep run and a fresh start. Now, they are trying to stop a skid, patch up a battered offense, and keep the locker room steady while a new quarterback steps in. The plan sounded simple in August. It has been anything but.

How Did Joe Burrow’s Injury Change the Bengals’ 2025 Outlook?

It started in Week 2 when Joe Burrow left the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars after a sack and landed on the Injured Reserve with a turf toe injury that required surgery. He was initially expected to miss at least ten to twelve weeks, which clouded the timeline and the schedule.

While a return this season has been discussed as a possibility, that hinges on where the team stands when he is ready.

Jake Browning stepped in and finished that Jaguars game, and the Bengals rallied to win 31-27 behind his 21-of-32 line for 241 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. That was a gutsy finish on a chaotic day, and it bought time but did not solve the bigger problem under center. The offensive line issues did not go away, and the margin for error shrank fast.

Based on PFSN’s QB Impact metric, Browning is ranked 37th among the quarterbacks in the league.

Why Did Cincinnati Turn From Jake Browning to Joe Flacco?

After that first relief appearance, Browning struggled to stack consistent weeks, throwing four touchdowns against five interceptions over the next three games. That inconsistency made it tough to unlock Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins fully, and drives stalled too often. When a backup is pressing, the whole offense feels it, from protection calls to spacing to rhythm.

So Cincinnati made a move. The Bengals traded a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Cleveland Browns for Joe Flacco and a 2026 sixth-round pick, as noted by ESPN. Flacco had lost the Browns’ starting job to rookie Dillon Gabriel after a rough first month, which opened the door for an in-division deal that gave Cincinnati a veteran option. A change like that always reshapes the quarterback room overnight.

In his first game with Cincinnati, Flacco completed 29 of 45 passes for 219 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in a 27-18 road loss to the Green Bay Packers. That line showed poise, quick decisions, and a plan to keep the ball out of harm’s way. It also showed that a unit was still figuring out the timing in key spots.

Flacco is a veteran with years of big-game experience, and that matters when the huddle needs a calm voice. His success will still come down to protection and clean pockets, because even the best reads do not matter if the rush gets home. The Bengals need to keep him upright on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers, then let the timing with the receivers build from there.
