It’s hard to point to a better college football coach over the last two seasons than Curt Cignetti. After leading Indiana to a College Football Playoff appearance last season, he has the Hoosiers ranked No. 3 in the country through seven weeks in 2025.
With James Franklin being fired from Penn State, Cignetti’s name has been mentioned as a potential replacement. The Indiana head coach recently clarified his future in Bloomington while admitting what he did wrong in his first year with the Hoosiers.
What Did Curt Cignetti Say About His ‘Out of Character’ Behavior and Indiana Future?
When Cignetti first took over at Indiana, the Hoosiers quickly became a Big Ten contender. They started the 2024 season 10-0, and the head coach wasn’t afraid to speak his mind, often making controversial comments about his team and where they stood compared to the rest of the college football world.
Cignetti’s brash confidence rubbed many people the wrong way, and in a recent interview on “The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast,” he admitted those remarks were out of character. He explained that he made them because he felt Indiana’s football program needed some fire behind it.
“You know, when I got the job here on day one, there were a lot of things that kind of rubbed me the wrong way,” Cingetti said.
He continued, “The vibe I was getting, just the general reaction to football. And you know, I sort of had to be out there a little bit, and I made some comments, let’s face it. It was a little bit out of character for me, but I thought that’s what this program needed.”
This season has been different. While the Hoosiers are once again proving many people wrong, sitting at 6-0 through the first seven weeks and fresh off a win over Oregon, Cignetti has been much quieter about his team in 2025, letting their on-field performance do the talking.
Despite his over-the-top confidence last year, Cignetti has more than proven that he’s one of the best coaches in the country. His success at Indiana has opened other opportunities, and he’s been one of the most mentioned names in Penn State’s coaching search.
While Penn State would love to have him, Cignetti clarified that he’s fully committed to Indiana, explaining that he loves many aspects of his life in Bloomington.

“Our team knows that I have 100% commitment to developing this football team to its fullest potential,” Cignetti said. “I love the people that I report to, love living here, the people in Bloomington have been great, the response in the state of Indiana has been terrific.”
While Indiana was great in 2024, something about the 2025 team feels different. No one took the Hoosiers seriously a season ago, but after wins against programs like Illinois and Oregon, it’s hard not to think that Cignetti has a chance to win it all this year.
With Cignetti fully committed to the Hoosiers and learning from his past mistakes, the sky is the limit for Indiana in 2025.
