Omarion Hampton Injury Update: What’s the Latest on the Chargers RB, and Will He Play in Week 7?

Chargers rookie RB Omarion Hampton joins IR after ankle injury in Week 5. With Najee Harris also out, LA likely to explore trade options.

The Los Angeles Chargers are on an injury spree this season. The worst part is that the key players orchestrating their wins early in the regular season are slowly succumbing to injuries. It started with DT Josh Fuga in early August. The big blow came in September when RB Najee Harris suffered a torn Achilles in Week 3. And this week, things look bad regarding the team’s running back situation.

Sitting at a 4-2 record, the Chargers’ latest IR list, released on October 12, 2025, included RB Omarion Hampton. The promising rookie was the team’s first-round pick of the 2025 NFL Draft as the 22nd overall. It is a big blow to the team.

How Does Omarion Hampton’s Run With the Chargers Look So Far?

Following Harris’ injury, Hampton presented an explosive performance against the New York Giants in Week 4. The Chargers lost the game 21-18, but he made exceptional numbers. He carried the ball 12 times for 128 yards and scored a touchdown.

Hampton was targeted 5 times for 37 yards, and caught ’em all. But the game’s highlight reel was him running 54 yards to a touchdown in the fourth quarter while the team was mounting a comeback. However, hell broke loose in the game against the Washington Commanders.

What Happened to Hampton?

In the third quarter, Hampton was running a route out of the backfield when he got clipped by Washington’s defense. According to ESPN’s Kris Rhim, he was escorted to the locker room with a trainer soon after the incident. Hampton wrapped up his Week 5 performance with 12 carries for 44 yards, catching all six targets for 26 yards. He was later spotted wearing a walking boot on his left foot in the locker room.

Hampton was slated to undergo ankle testing on Monday, and the result has now been declared through the IR list. Unfortunately, he will not be playing for the Chargers in Week 7. NFL insider Mike Garafolo tweeted a video on X on October 12, 2025, with the updates.

He wrote, “From @NFLGameDay with The Insiders on the #Chargers nosing around the trade market for a running back with Omarion Hampton expected to be sidelined longer than the four-week IR minimum.”

According to the updates, it seems likely that the Chargers will be in the market before the November 4 deadline to get themselves a running back as Hampton and Harris nurse their long-term injuries.

According to PFSN’s Running Back Impact (RBi), Hampton is graded C+ with an impact score of 78.2 this season. With him out for four or more games, the Chargers will likely sign Kimani Vidal to the active roster. Vidal split the backfield snaps with Hassan Haskins when Hampton went out against the Commanders.
