The transfer portal provides college football players with the opportunity to explore additional opportunities and continue their careers at a different University if that is what they believe is best for their future.
While the transfer portal gives athletes freedom, it operates under strict NCAA guidelines. The portal was initially introduced in 2018, and the NCAA continues to fine-tune its rules to ensure fairness to both athletes and the universities.
College Football Transfer Portal Rules Explained
There are designated transfer strict windows that athletes must follow to be able to transfer.
Athletes cannot contact other coaches outside of these dates, and coaches can’t contact athletes outside of this window; there is no communication allowed between the parties during this time.
In addition, athletes must maintain good academic standing to be eligible for transfer. Since 2024, athletes can now transfer multiple times without losing eligibility.
When Does the College Football Transfer Portal Open?
On Tuesday Oct. 7th, the Division I Administrative Committee voted to approve the 15-day transfer portal window. This new window allowed college football players to enter the portal and communicate with other coaches from Jan. 2 through 16, 2026.
This change will eliminate the spring window for the transfer portal, making football a sport with a single offseason period for any transfer activity.

If a team were to make it to the postseason, players would still have the opportunity to transfer. These athletes will receive a five-day transfer window that will begin after their final postseason game is played.
Are There Exceptions to the College Football Transfer Portal Rules?
The committee also approved a new exception for players who are transferring due to coaching changes. Five days after the announcement of a new head coach being hired, a player will have a 15-day window to enter the portal.
In the past, these players had a 30-day window and this change cut their time in half. This only applies if a new head coach is hired or even if a head coach is fired.
