The New England Patriots are giving the Buffalo Bills fits through the first quarter of Sunday Night Football. What Happened to Antonio Gibson?

Gibson was returning a kickoff and fumbled the ball. His teammate TreVeyon Henderson fell on the ball to bail him out, but Gibson stayed down with a leg injury.

Gibson is not returning to Sunday night’s contest and is being examined for his knee injury.

The speed at which he was ruled out of the game is quite concerning. Doctor Jeff Mueller on X revealed concern for a potential ligament injury for Gibson. Mueller suggested the possibility of an ACL or an MCL injury, as well as potential damage to the meniscus. This is terrible news for the Patriots, as this would likely end his season.

He had six carries for 21 yards as well as one catch for five yards when he left with his injury. After starter Rhamondre Stevenson fumbled, Gibson was taking the rushing volume as Stevenson was benched.

Now, Gibson is out and opening an avenue for Henderson to get carries. The Patriots have a chance against the Bills and need to get the ground game working to help open up the offense for Drake Maye and the passing game. The defense has done its part in the first half, and it’s time for the Patriots’ offense to find its groove. They will have to do so without Gibson, who was set for a bulk of the carries for the rest of the game.

Gibson may not be relevant in fantasy himself, but his existence sure is. The former Commander has been way more involved than anyone expected after the Patriots spent a second-round pick on Henderson, who was supposed to be in a two-man timeshare with Stevenson.

So far, Stevenson and Gibson have both fumbled. Henderson had not touched the ball at the time of the 27-year-old running back’s injury, but he did bail the Patriots out by recovering it.

If Gibson is out, perhaps this will force the Patriots to put Henderson on the field and jumpstart his ascent. At the time of writing, Henderson had three carries for 19 yards and one reception for four yards as the score was tied at 3-3.
