Why Are the Buccaneers Wearing Different Uniforms? Everything to Know About Their Creamsicle Throwbacks

As they enter Week 5 with a 3-1 record, why are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wearing throwback creamsicle jerseys against the Seattle Seahawks?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been one of the most dangerous teams in the league to start the season. Dealing with a plethora of injuries to the offensive unit, they found a way to snatch victories with game-winning drives in the final two minutes of each of the first three weeks. Last week, they hit a speed bump in the form of the Philadelphia Eagles. However, their road doesn’t get any easier as they face off against another 3-1 squad in the Seattle Seahawks.

With the Seahawks pleasantly surprising people after going through a change at the most important position in the sport, the challenge is going to be on Tampa Bay to find an answer for the Seattle defense, especially with some key roster pieces out of the lineup. But the game on Sunday is going to be extra special for both sides, as they feature some throwback jerseys, with the Buccaneers rolling out a classic from nearly half a century ago.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Throwback Creamsicle Jersey

Before the start of the season, Tampa Bay revealed the unique jerseys as part of its throwback collection. With the franchise celebrating its 50th season, it chose to bring back an old classic, although with some modernized twists.

For the first two decades of its existence, the Buccaneers used the “Bucco Bruce” color scheme, with orange, red, and white as the primary colors. However, a revision with a new logo near the end of the 20th century brought the current red-and-pewter look.

Orange jerseys have featured for the Bucs every season since 2009. However, this was the first time they went back to a 1976 original. The jersey will be primarily white, with orange numbers and highlights, including a red trim.

However, the details go beyond that, with a creamsicle patch for the 50th season giving a nod to the team’s first fight song, with the words, “Hey! Hey! Tampa Bay!” stitched on the inside collar.

The team’s chief operating officer, Brian Ford, spoke about the value of bringing the old look back, stating:

“The ’76 Jersey represents a piece of Buccaneers history and serves as a tribute to the generations of fans and players who shaped this franchise. As we launch into our 50th season, we’re proud to reintroduce The ’76 Jersey and the tradition it embodies. It is a reminder that every Buccaneers fan, from the originals to the newest generation, is part of an evolving story that started in 1976 and continues being written today.”

The Buccaneers’ offense, which ranks near the bottom-10 of the league on PFSN’s Offense Impact, has been a bit of a disappointment so far, thanks in large part to the injuries on the roster. The last time they wore these jerseys was against the New York Jets in Week 3.
