The very nature of the NFL demands competition between the athletes. As they try to gain an advantage on the field, the key goal is to have a better night than their opponent. However, in an attempt to secure that victory, players have to go beyond the actual play on the field and engage in mind games to secure an advantage. That is where trash talk comes into the picture.
As a defensive lineman, Brian Burns gets to interact with the entirety of an opposing offense. Thanks to his star power and talent, he’s regularly been a player opponents have to game plan for. During a recent interview, he revealed which opposing quarterbacks, most notably Patrick Mahomes, tried to talk trash to get into his head on a regular basis.
Brian Burns Spills the Beans on Patrick Mahomes
Since coming into the league as a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Burns has slowly solidified himself as one of the premier linebackers in the league. A key anchor to the defense, he is part of an elite defensive front for the New York Giants, who are ranked 23rd in PFSN’s Defense Impact metrics.
A two-time Pro Bowler, he’s produced consistently every season, racking up 59.5 sacks through six seasons, including 12.5 sacks in 2022. Now, as he’s taken over a leadership role for the Giants, he continues to lay the foundation for an excellent unit in New York.
During a recent appearance with Jordan Schultz, the conversation turned lighthearted, as Schultz questioned him about trash-talking quarterbacks. Being brutally honest, Burns revealed his experiences with each name that Schultz brought up.
The first name on the list, understandably, was Mahomes. His impeccable record and undeniable talent would make most assume that he tried to gain an advantage on the field through trash-talking as well.
However, that wasn’t the three-time Super Bowl champion’s style. “Mahomes is actually nice to me. I feel like he play that game, where he trying to be your friend so you don’t hit him as hard.”
Then, Burns brought up a name on his own, claiming, “Baker [Mayfield] talk s*** for sure.” Schultz’s next target was another two-time league MVP, this time in Lamar Jackson. “Nah, Lamar don’t say nothing. We from the crib. We got love anyway.”
The last name to round out the list was the other piece of the AFC quarterback puzzle, Josh Allen. “I only played him once, but he did talk s***.” He did offer one distinction between the trash talk that he received from quarterbacks and other players, though.
“The quarterbacks will never say nothing too crazy, for real. Unless, you going at them.” Fresh off their first win of the season, Burns has to be overjoyed as the franchise tries to rally behind its new centerpiece, Jaxson Dart.
