The Pittsburgh Steelers’ trip to Dublin was supposed to showcase their top backfield weapon, but a late development left Jaylen Warren out of action. His unexpected absence has raised questions about his short-term availability and whether he will return in time for a crucial Week 6 divisional matchup.
Pittsburgh Steelers Remain Silent on Warren’s Status
Heading into Week 4, optimism was growing inside the Steelers’ building that Warren would play. According to Jason Katz of PFSN, the running back was initially limited at practice, with the Steelers first referring to it as “veteran rest” before officially listing him with a knee injury.
Confidence continued to build throughout the week, and many expected him to suit up in Dublin.
That confidence quickly evaporated. Just 90 minutes before kickoff against the Minnesota Vikings, the Steelers declared Warren inactive. Head coach Mike Tomlin explained that Warren was a pregame decision, noting that while he participated in warmups, he ultimately did not feel right.
The decision to rest him, Katz noted, was influenced by the team’s upcoming Week 5 bye, which would give him extra time to recover.
The Steelers’ approach is consistent with their usual handling of injury situations. Katz pointed out that they are among the most secretive teams in the league when it comes to disclosing player injuries, and they have not shared a recovery timeline. Updates are not expected before the team returns to practice next Monday.
The decision to hold Warren out was made after the team’s final practice before the game. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that “Steelers RB Jaylen Warren did not feel right after Saturday’s practice and the Steelers decided to hold him out today.”
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo also reported that Warren’s name appeared on the injury report later in the week due to a knee issue.
Warren’s ͏absence is significant for more than just his workload. Through three games, he’s logged 43 carries for 132 ͏yards and ͏11 receptions for 14͏2 yards, including one ͏receiving touchdown. While͏ his ͏3.1͏ yards ͏per carry is not elite, his versatility makes him a ͏critical piece of͏ the Steelers’ offense.
That importance is reflected in PFSN’s analytics, with Warren ranking 23rd in the site’s RB Impact Metrics, a sign of how vital he is to the Steelers’ offensive success.
Backup Kenneth Gainwell and rookie Kaleb Johnson are expected to see more action in his absence. However, Jordon Lawrenz of PFSN reported that the timing of the Week 5 bye is expected to give Warren enough time to fully recover before the Steelers face the Cleveland Browns on October 12.
For now, the Steelers are keeping quiet about his progress. However, with no signs of a long-term setback and a well-timed bye providing additional rest, all signs point to Warren being available and ready to make an impact when Week 6 arrives.͏
