The Indianapolis Colts have been one of the best-surprising teams of the 2025 season. After a quarterback battle between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones plagued their offseason, the latter finally got the starter’s nod to begin the season. The dividends for the Colts have been immediate, as Jones has led them to a 3-0 start. However, they face their toughest challenge when they take on the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4.
The game offers the team a chance to ditch any fluky labels associated with them and prove that Indianapolis is here to stay. However, it’s not going to be an easy challenge, especially against a Rams team that lost in embarrassing fashion last week. To make matters worse for the Colts, their best wide receiver, Alec Pierce, isn’t guaranteed to be on the field Sunday after his game against the Tennessee Titans ended last week.
Will Alec Pierce Play Against the Los Angeles Rams?
As a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, it took a while for Pierce to become a major contributor for Indianapolis. After back-to-back seasons with less than 600 yards to begin his career, he had a breakout year in 2024.
Tallying 824 yards and seven touchdowns, he led the team in both categories and seemed poised to take another step forward in Week 3. That is precisely how things have panned out during the season’s first three weeks with a new quarterback.
As the Colts lead the way with the best offensive unit in the league per PFSN’s Offense Impact, Pierce has played a huge role in making that a reality. Already up to 171 yards, he has been consistently excellent in all three Indy victories.
However, the game against Tennessee saw a scary sight for the wide receiver. Trying to haul in a long ball from Jones on 2nd and 4th, Pierce had a brutal landing, with his head whipping off the field.
He was immediately placed in concussion protocol, with his status for Week 4 in serious jeopardy. As it turned out, any fears from the Colts fan base were fully warranted. After missing all practices this week, head coach Shane Steichen made it official on Friday.
Pierce is ruled out for the game against Los Angeles, with AD Mitchell likely absorbing a lot of the playing time and snaps from the fourth-year wide receiver. The Colts still have a variety of players to contribute to the passing game, but the downfield presence of Pierce and his 19.0 yards per reception is a hefty blow for the team to absorb.
