The New York Giants are heading into a primetime battle against the Kansas City Chiefs, and while optimism surrounds their offensive potential, questions about personnel have lingered all week. One of those questions involves second-year running back Tyrone Tracy Jr., whose early-season role and health have drawn plenty of attention.
Giants Seek Stability in Backfield Ahead of Chiefs Clash
In their Week 2 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the Giants produced a season-high 506 yards of offense, their best mark since 2019. Yet Tracy’s contributions were limited. He carried the ball five times for 15 yards and added four receptions for 36 yards, as reported by PFSN’s Sean Neumann.
His snap share also shifted noticeably, dropping from 74 percent in Week 1 to 42 percent in Week 2, with rookie Cam Skattebo seeing more action.
Neumann noted that Tracy’s calf injury may have influenced his reduced workload against the Cowboys. The situation raised concerns about whether he would be available in Week 3, particularly as Skattebo impressed with 11 carries for 45 yards and his first career touchdown.
The rookie’s usage jumped from just 12 percent of snaps in Week 1 to more than half of the snaps in Week 2, giving head coach Brian Daboll another viable option in the backfield.
Tracy has not yet matched his 2024 performance, when he logged 192 carries for 839 yards and five touchdowns. His recent form includes nine straight games under 60 rushing yards, with his last 100-yard effort dating back to Week 10 of last season against the Carolina Panthers.
Even so, his speed and pass-catching ability remain valuable to the Giants’ offense, especially in tandem with Skattebo’s physical running style.
Speculation about Tracy’s status continued throughout the week, but NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Friday that the running back was no longer on the injury report and would be available for Sunday night’s game against Kansas City.
#Giants RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. (calf) and WR Darius Slayton (groin/calf) are off the injury report and good to go Sunday night vs. the #Chiefs.
LT Andrew Thomas (foot) is officially questionable.

Wide receiver Darius Slayton also received clearance, while left tackle Andrew Thomas was still listed as questionable.
The update ensures that the Giants will have Tracy available, though it does not guarantee how many touches he will see. Daboll now ͏faces the challenge of balancing opportunities between Tracy and Skattebo.
Neumann suggested the two could form an effective one-two punch, with Tracy excelling in the passing game and Skattebo thriving as a between-the-tackles runner.
With Tracy cleared to play, the Giants will bring their full backfield rotation into a critical primetime matchup. Their ability to use both runners effectively could play a significant role͏ in the ͏outcome against the Chiefs.
