Is Travis Kelce Retiring After This Season? Latest Rumors, Contract Info, and More

Travis Kelce is in the final year of his Chiefs contract and approaching 36, fueling retirement rumors. Will 2025 be his last NFL season? Here’s what we know.

Travis Kelce has been one of the most dominant tight ends in the NFL for the better part of the last decade, but recent seasons have shown signs that his career may be nearing its end. After one of his least productive years in 2024 and the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl defeat, speculation about his retirement began to swirl.

Although Kelce returned for the 2025 season and has shown flashes of his old form through the first two weeks, the chatter hasn’t quieted down. His engagement to Taylor Swift and a recent feature by ESPN’s Nate Taylor have only reignited the conversation about whether 2025 could be his final run.

Will the 2025 Season Be the Final of Travis Kelce’s Storied Career?

Kelce has been a centerpiece of the Chiefs’ dynasty alongside Patrick Mahomes, helping the team win an impressive three Super Bowls. Both the organization and head coach Andy Reid have repeatedly highlighted his impact while also making it clear they hope he keeps playing.

However, his form in recent years has been a concern. From 2016 to 2022, he racked up seven straight 1,000-receiving-yard seasons but has failed to cross that mark in the last two seasons.

His 2024 campaign was his least productive since becoming the Chiefs’ full-time starter, and with his 36th birthday on the horizon, it’s easy to see why retirement speculation continues to grow.

Kelce chose not to walk away after last season because he didn’t want his career to end with the Chiefs’ disappointing Super Bowl loss. Instead, he returned with the mindset of finishing on a higher note in 2025.

“Since he announced his return to the Chiefs in late February, all signs have pointed to the 2025 season being Kelce’s last,” Taylor wrote. “Since June, Kelce, who is in the final year of his contract, has spoken about his future with the team through only this season.

“Several members of the Chiefs’ organization, including in the front office and business department, are coy to use the word “retirement,” but they have already expressed their appreciation for Kelce’s importance to the franchise and have said they hope to experience plenty of joy while cherishing his performances.”

However, it’s important to note that Kelce hasn’t explicitly said he plans to retire. He’s left the door open for a possible return in 2026, though many believe a Chiefs Super Bowl victory this season could be the perfect moment for him to walk away on top.

Kelce Contract Info

Taylor noted that one of the biggest “signs” pointing toward Kelce’s potential retirement was his contract situation. He is currently in the final year of his two-year, $34.25 million deal with the Chiefs, and with no extension in place for 2026, it appears increasingly likely this could be his last season.

Kelce has made it clear he won’t play for another team, so if he does return, it will be with Kansas City or no one else.

Should this be the end, Kelce will finish his career having earned an incredible $111,194,254, the most money ever made by a tight end in NFL history. Beyond the numbers, it underscores a career that redefined the position and helped cement his status as one of the greatest ever to play the game.
