The tennis world fondly remembers the intense and captivating rivalry between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, and there’s now a glimmer of hope that it could be reignited despite both icons having stepped away from the sport.
Ahead of the 2025 Laver Cup, Federer opened up about the possibility of facing his longtime rival Nadal again as part of an utterly unique concept.
What Did Roger Federer Say About a Prospective Rafael Nadal Match?
Intense rivalries among top players provide the sport with an element of intrigue, and tennis witnessed the same through the iconic battles between Nadal and Federer. They poured everything into their clashes on clay, grass, and hard courts just to stand tall eventually. Across 40 encounters on tour, the Spaniard ultimately held a commanding 24–16 lead over the Swiss.
In a recent interview with CNBC, Federer was asked about the possibility of launching a senior tour alongside Nadal. The Swiss great lit up at the idea, revealing he has been staying in shape and hoping Nadal would also be open to playing again.
While the notion of senior tennis felt weird, he floated the idea of a unique ‘Fedal’ tour that could reunite the two legends on court.
“Yeah, why not! I love Raffa (Nadal). I have played four hours of tennis the other day here in San Francisco and then in L.A also another hour and a half. Before that, I have been playing a lot, I am trying to keep in good shape, and I know that Raffa is also totally open to maybe play some tennis. It sounds terrible, senior tennis to us, but maybe we can create a tour, like a Fedal tour or something like that. It would be cool,” he said.
While Federer amassed 103 singles titles compared to Nadal’s 92, the Spaniard edged ahead on the Grand Slam stage with 22 Majors to Federer’s 20. Their contrasting styles, Nadal’s relentless aggression against Federer’s effortless composure, added another captivating layer to their iconic rivalry.
Federer Shares a Key Reason To Start the Laver Cup
The Laver Cup, now in its eighth edition in 2025, was introduced to the ATP Tour in 2017 through Federer’s vision, alongside Jorge Paulo Lemann and Tennis Australia. Named in honor of Australian great Rod Laver, the event has since delivered countless unforgettable moments for tennis fans.
Later in the interview, Federer revealed that a key motivation behind creating the Laver Cup was to honor and showcase the achievements of past great players. Referring to the former ‘Champions Tour,’ he hinted at the vast potential for a legends-style tournament.

“And it is also one of the reasons that I did start the Laver Cup, to shine the light on the past greats of the game and maybe a seniors tour. We’ve had it a little bit, obviously in tennis, it was called the Champions Tour at the time. It did exist, but I think there is a lot of appetite for seeing past champions in tennis and I could maybe look into that as well,” he added.
The three-day annual event brings together top players from Europe and the rest of the world to battle for the coveted title. Team Europe has largely reigned supreme with five titles, while Team World has claimed the trophy twice.
