What Did Rennae Stubbs Say About Taylor Townsend’s Chinese Cuisine Controversy Amid BJK Cup Finals?

Team USA started its campaign in the BJK Finals by defeating Team Kazakhstan 2-1 in the quarterfinals. This victory allowed them to advance to the semifinals, where they will face Team Great Britain.

Before the USA’s quarterfinal match against Kazakhstan, Townsend expressed her displeasure with the food provided during a team dinner, particularly criticizing dishes made with bullfrogs and turtles. Her remarks drew heavy criticism from tennis fans around the world.

In light of this incident, while speaking on ‘The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast,’ Stubbs recalled a similar experience when former Wimbledon Champion Conchita Martínez fed her pig’s blood in Barcelona.

“I went to lunch with Conchita Martínez in Barcelona one time and she was ordering all this food and then she’s like, ‘Try this,’ and I ate it and she goes, ‘That’s pigs blood. I go, ‘Excuse me?’ She told me what it was and I was like I wanna die,” Stubbs said.

The Aussie acknowledged that, like Townsend, many people have said and done things they regret. She also stated that someone like Townsend, who has a large following and platform, should be mindful and think twice before posting comments that might offend others.

“I think the problem is when you have a platform and when you have a large platform and you go to your Tik Toks and your Instagrams… Look, we’ve all done it, we’ve all f*cked up. We’ve all put sh*t out that we probably regret putting out at some point. We’ve all done it but you have to recognize if you have a big platform you have to say to yourself what does this insinuate and what am I saying in this situation,” she continued.

Stubbs noted that during a team dinner at an event like the Billie Jean King Cup, players can express their thoughts freely among their teammates, but they should exercise caution before sharing opinions on social media.

“Maybe most people don’t wanna eat frogs but go to your team dinners… I’ve been to many BJK Cups, and you can laugh about stuff and say whatever you want to your fellow teammates and your team but you have to be real careful what you put out,” Stubbs added.

During Team USA’s knockout tie against Team Kazakhstan, Navarro secured a 1-0 lead for America by defeating Yulia Putintseva with a score of 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(6). However, in the next singles rubber, Pegula lost to Elena Rybakina 6-4, 6-1, allowing Kazakhstan to level the tie at 1-1.

In the doubles rubber, Pegula and Townsend emerged victorious against Rybakina and Putintseva with a scoreline of 6-2, 7-6(1), allowing Team USA to win the tie 2-1 and advance to the semifinals.
