Billy Napier’s Florida Gators face a big test as they prepare to visit No. 4 Miami. After back-to-back losses, the program’s confidence sits at an all-time low with growing pressure on both coach and quarterback.
Will Florida’s Low Confidence Lead to Another Collapse?
During an episode of “The Joel Klatt Show,” Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt expressed serious concerns about Florida’s current mindset. Klatt pointed to the team’s shaky confidence and the heavy pressure now on sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway.
“The confidence level for Florida has got to be at an all-time low,” Klatt said on his podcast. “You’ve got rumors swirling about the status of their head coach, the quarterback that is supposed to be the reason that you’re winning games was the reason that you lost to LSU.”
Klatt’s biggest worry centers on how the Gators will respond when adversity strikes. He fears Florida players will give up the moment things go wrong against Miami.
“The fear that I would have for Florida is that the first thing that doesn’t go their way in this game, you start to get a, ‘here we go again’ mentality on the sideline,” Klatt explained. “When you don’t have confidence or momentum as a team and things start to go wrong, which they will in this matchup, you’re on the road against the number four team in the country. Miami’s going to have success.”
Klatt continued his analysis by questioning Florida’s ability to bounce back mid-game. “There’s no doubt… the problem comes on your team. Can you pull yourself out of that momentum? Can you find confidence where there is no confidence?”
The analyst put all the responsibility directly on Lagway, questioning whether the young quarterback can lift his teammates when the game gets tough.
“The guy that has to do that as the quarterback has to be the quarterback is DJ Lagway, after last week in a position where he can pull his team out of that funk in the middle of a game. I have my questions about that,” Klatt continued.
Why Are DJ Lagway’s Struggles Raising Red Flags for Florida?
DJ Lagway’s early-season performance validates Klatt’s concerns about the quarterback’s ability to rescue Florida from difficult situations. Through three games, the 20-year-old has thrown six interceptions while completing 71 of 100 passes for 629 yards and five touchdowns.
The turnover issues proved costly in Florida’s 20-10 loss at LSU, where Lagway threw five interceptions despite gaining over 300 passing yards. PFSN’s Oliver Hodgkinson provided insight into Lagway’s struggles against LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane.
“The former Virginia Tech Hokie didn’t account for any of the five interceptions of DJ Lagway, but only allowed a 33.3% catch percentage, 0.2 yards per coverage snap, and the second-year Gators quarterback had a 42.4 QB rating when targeting a player who should be considered the Thorpe Award frontrunner,” he said.
Hodgkinson’s analysis reveals how completely Lagway was shut down when facing elite coverage. Even without recording an interception himself, Delane limited Florida’s passing attack to minimal production whenever Lagway targeted his side of the field.

The pressure intensifies as Florida travels to Hard Rock Stadium to face a Miami defense. According to PFSN’s CFB Playoff Predictor, Miami holds a 73.5% chance to win with a massive gap in the power rankings.
Florida’s offensive struggles become more glaring when measured against Miami’s strengths. The Gators rank 38th nationally in offense while Miami sits 17th, creating a significant mismatch.
Another poor performance could amplify questions about both Lagway’s development and Napier’s job security. The current 1-2 start, combined with a brutal upcoming schedule featuring Georgia and Texas, puts his $7.4 million annual contract under scrutiny as the Gators need a turnaround.
The Gators’ showdown with the No. 4 Hurricanes will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday on ABC.
