In a recent episode of ‘The Player’s Box Podcast,’ co-host Jessica Pegula offered a candid perspective on the relationship between fellow American athletes Ben Shelton and Trinity Rodman. As two rising stars in tennis and soccer, respectively, their romance has garnered significant attention.
Pegula highlighted how injuries, travel schedules, and time apart create obstacles and opportunities for Shelton and Rodman to grow closer.
How Does Jessica Pegula Explain Ben Shelton and Trinity Rodman Supporting Each Other Through Setbacks?
The relationship between Shelton and Rodman went public in March 2025. Their relationship has been marked by mutual support at various sporting events. Rodman has cheered on Shelton during marquee tennis tournaments like Wimbledon, while Shelton has been a fixture in the stands for Rodman’s Washington Spirit matches in the NWSL.

Their connection has faced real tests, including Shelton’s shoulder injury that cut short his US Open run and Rodman’s months-long recovery from a back problem. Even during her absence from professional soccer, Rodman made it a point to be courtside with Shelton’s family. Her return in August 2025 was marked by a match-winning goal, signaling her comeback.
Discussing their dynamic, Pegula noted how Rodman’s injury earlier in the year allowed her to travel more with Shelton, but she expects that balance to shift now that Rodman is back competing. “I do think when she was traveling earlier in the year, it’s because she was hurt,” Pegula explained.
“But yeah, I’m interested now that she’s back. I don’t know if she’s going to be traveling the same amount. I mean, I would assume no. So that’s always tough, but I also feel like it would be exciting, ’cause then he gets to watch her games or keep up with it. So there’s something like he’s rooting her on from a distance, and she’s watching him play in his matches. I feel like it would keep you more excited.”
Shelton struggled with a shoulder injury recently, which forced him to retire from his third-round match at the US Open against Adrian Mannarino. The pain was severe enough that he also withdrew from the USA’s Davis Cup tie against the Czech Republic and the Laver Cup.
Shelton is currently focused on rehab and working with his medical team, and there is no confirmed return date to competitive play yet.
