College football fans were treated to a stunning result on Saturday, as Georgia Tech delivered one of Week 3’s biggest upsets with a 24-21 victory over No. 12 Clemson.
The Yellow Jackets snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Tigers in dramatic fashion when kicker Aidan Birr drilled a 55-yard field goal as time expired, sending Bobby Dodd Stadium into chaos and pushing Georgia Tech to a perfect 3-0 start.
How Did Dabo Swinney’s Tigers Let This One Slip Away?
The loss was a gut-punch for Clemson. Although the Tigers rallied to tie the score at 21 with just over three minutes remaining, their defense couldn’t secure the final, crucial stop.
As Georgia Tech methodically moved into field goal range, Birr created a moment that Yellow Jackets fans will remember for years.

This wasn’t how Clemson’s season was supposed to unfold. The Tigers entered 2025 as the ACC favorite, ranked No. 4 in the nation, and were widely considered a postseason candidate thanks to a veteran roster led by quarterback Cade Klubnik.
Instead, after losing to LSU in Week 1, they are now 1-2. A second September loss is a nightmare scenario for a program with championship aspirations.
Despite the result, head coach Dabo Swinney was not ready to let despair set in. After the game, he praised his team’s effort and resilience, reminding everyone that there is still a lot of football left to be played.
“There’s no quitters in that locker room. There’s no quit in me, that’s for sure,” Swinney said. “We’ll try to find a way to win a game next week.”

However, Swinney also didn’t sugarcoat what went wrong. He candidly admitted the Tigers’ defense was frequently out of position, which allowed Georgia Tech to extend drives and keep the pressure on.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney on what changes need to be made after a loss like this. Highlights the defense and says they were “soft on the perimeter” and gave up too many long conversions. “We’ve gotta figure out if it’s personnel, the call, how it’s being taught”

Can Clemson’s Playoff Hopes Survive a 1-2 Start?
That honest assessment highlights the urgency now facing Clemson’s program. To keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive, the Tigers cannot afford another misstep.
They secured a spot in the expanded playoff last season despite three losses, but with a game against Syracuse next and most of the ACC schedule remaining, the road ahead won’t get any easier.

Clemson fans are accustomed to the sky-high standards set under Swinney, who built the program into a perennial powerhouse. A 1-2 start doesn’t erase that legacy, but it does force the team to find answers much earlier than anyone anticipated.
Now, it remains to be seen whether this loss becomes a turning point that rallies the team or the moment that defines a season of disappointment.
