How Will Alcaraz Build on His Dominant US Open Performance?

Just days after winning the 2025 US Open, Carlos Alcaraz was spotted training at the Carlos Alcaraz Academy in preparation for the upcoming 2025 Laver Cup. Alcaraz secured his spot in the final of the New York Major by defeating Reilly Opelka, Mattia Bellucci, Luciano Darderi, Arthur Rinderknech, Jiří Lehečka, and Novak Djokovic.

In the championship match, he overcame defending champion Jannik Sinner with a scoreline of 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to win his second title at Flushing Meadows, his second Grand Slam title of the 2024-25 season, and his sixth Major title overall. The victory also returned him to the world No. 1 ranking for the first time since August 2023.

What Makes the 2025 Laver Cup Special for Team Europe?

The 2025 Laver Cup will be held from September 19 to September 21, 2025, on an indoor hard court at the Chase Center in San Francisco. Beyond Alcaraz, Team Europe will include players like Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Jakub Menšík, and Flavio Cobolli, all aiming to defend their titles from the previous year.

Yannick Noah will be the team captain, and Tim Henman will be the vice captain. The format pits six of Europe’s best players against six from the rest of the world over three intense days of competition.

Ahead of the Laver Cup, the World No. 1 was seen practicing in Murcia, Spain. During training sessions, he was also spotted sporting newly dyed platinum hair, adding a fresh look to match his dominant form.

Speaking about his experience of playing at the Laver Cup for the first time last year, Alcaraz described it as “special,” stating that it was “great” to connect with other players off the court.

“It surprised me a lot. I loved it. I really wanted to be part of the Laver Cup again. The experience was special. Getting to know the players much better off the court, for me, was great,” Alcaraz said.

The Spaniard also mentioned that he loved the format of playing singles and doubles and being present to support his teammates. This team dynamic starkly contrasts the individual nature of regular ATP tour events.

“The intensity with which we play in the matches is pretty high. I loved the format, playing singles, playing doubles, just to be there coaching and supporting my teammates. We get to see tennis from the outside, too. It’s a great point of view,” he added.

How Did Carlos Alcaraz Perform at Laver Cup in 2024?

At the 2024 Laver Cup, Team Europe, along with Alcaraz, included players such as Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud, Grigor Dimitrov, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Giuliano Cobolli, and Jan-Lennard Struff. Alcaraz had a brilliant run at the tournament, winning three of his four, including his singles and one doubles match.

On the tournament’s first day, Alcaraz partnered with Zverev in a doubles match, which they lost to Team World’s pair of Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton, 6-7(5), 4-6. The loss provided early motivation for what would become a dominant individual performance.

The following day, Alcaraz faced Shelton in a singles match and won, 6-4, 6-4. This victory helped swing momentum back toward Team Europe after the opening doubles setback.

On the tournament’s final day, Alcaraz teamed up with Ruud to defeat the Team World duo of Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, winning the match 6-2, 7-6(8). The doubles victory set up a dramatic finish to the three-day competition.

In the last singles match of the event, where the winner would claim the title, Alcaraz defeated Fritz 6-2, 7-5, securing the fifth Laver Cup for Team Europe. His clutch performance in the decisive match showcased the same championship composure he would later display at the US Open.
