‘Most Perfect Gift’ — J.J. McCarthy and Fiancée Katya Announce Birth of Baby Boy After Vikings QB’s NFL Debut

J.J. McCarthy dazzled in his NFL debut, and now celebrates the birth of his first child, marking a truly unforgettable week.

It’s been a week, J.J. McCarthy, and his family will never forget. The Minnesota Vikings quarterback finally made his long-awaited NFL debut on Monday Night Football, and just a few days later, he and his fiancée, Katya Kuropas, welcomed their first child.

McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft, had to wait longer than most for this moment. A torn meniscus in his right knee during the 2024 preseason forced him to miss his entire rookie season, and he even needed a second procedure to address lingering swelling.

Vikings fans patiently waited, hoping their young quarterback would bounce back, and on September 8, he delivered.

Incredible Comeback on Monday Night, J.J. McCarthy Welcomes Baby Boy to the Family

It was an unforgettable night on the field, but life was even sweeter off the field. Just a few days after his debut, McCarthy and Kuropas shared the news that their baby boy had arrived. They named him Rome Micah McCarthy, and Kuropas posted on Instagram:

“Welcome to the world Rome Micah McCarthy. The sweetest, most perfect gift from God!! We are so unbelievably blessed to be your parents.”

The couple has been together since high school in Illinois, and the birth of their son marked the perfect way to cap a milestone week. McCarthy even missed Thursday’s practice to be with his family, though he’s expected to suit up for Sunday night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Facing the Chicago Bears, McCarthy’s debut got off to a shaky start. An early interception returned for a touchdown, leaving Vikings fans holding their breath. But the fourth quarter brought a different story.

McCarthy rallied Minnesota to a 27-24 comeback victory, throwing two touchdown passes and running in a 14-yard score. With three fourth-quarter touchdowns in his first game, he became the first quarterback in NFL history to pull off that feat, and the first to lead a 10-plus point comeback in a debut since Steve Young in 1985.

What a Week for McCarthy and His Family

For McCarthy, the week was a whirlwind of emotions, from the highs and lows of an NFL debut to the joy of welcoming a new life into the world. It was a reminder that behind the helmet and the stats, there’s a human story, one of patience, perseverance, and now, family.

Few could have predicted the career and personal victories McCarthy would achieve in less than a week. A triumph in a comeback. A son who has just arrived in the arrived. He undoubtedly received the “most perfect gift” this week.
