Utah vs. Wyoming Preview: Head-to-Head, Grades, and Prediction for College Football Week 3

No. 20 Utah vs. Wyoming in Week 3 brings altitude, defense, and drama. Preview head-to-head matchups, grades, and predictions for this showdown.

Forget the narrative that No. 20 Utah playing its last non-conference game at Wyoming in Week 3 is weird. This intermountain showdown will be the closest thing to a true test the Utes have had before they embark on an arduous Big 12 journey. Both of these teams are physical, having allowed only one touchdown through two games, and have some idea of how to play football in elevation, despite a nearly 3,000-foot difference.

It should be fun to watch Utah’s quarterback Devon Dampier, who ranks second in the FBS in completion percentage (79), throw against a defense that has not allowed 200 or more passing yards in any of its last six games. It may be a little early for Halloween, but someone on the internet once said, “Things can get spooky sometimes in Laramie.”

Utah vs. Wyoming Head-to-Head Record

Saturday will be the first matchup between Utah and Wyoming since October 16, 2010, when the Utes defeated the Cowboys 30-6 in Laramie. Utah has won four consecutive games in the series and 10 of the last 11 meetings. This will be the 84th meeting between the two teams, with Utah holding a 51-31-1 edge, but Wyoming leading 20-19 in Laramie.

The two teams were conference rivals for years, and thanks to an almost-decade-old scheduling deal, we get to see them reignite their old Mountain West rivalry for the first time in 15 years.

Utah vs. Wyoming Prediction

Will we get a little Mountain West After Dark in Laramie Saturday night? Possibly, but the safer bet is on Utah to claim the win — more than three scores favor the Utes. That feels a little disrespectful to a Wyoming team that ranks seventh in the nation in total defense and second in the nation in scoring defense at 3.5 per game.

While the gaps between the offenses may seem insurmountable, don’t sleep on one of the nation’s top tight ends, Gyllenborg, who has started slow for Wyoming but thrives in big-game environments. If the Pokes can limit Utah’s big plays, execute mistake-free football, and involve the crowd, they may be able to keep things close.

Prediction: Utah 21, Wyoming 14
