Mike Elko Sends Myles Garrett Message on Bold SEC Claim While Providing Marcel Reed Injury Update

Texas A&M HC Mike Elko provided several key updates at Monday's press conference, one of which surrounding the status of QB Marcel Reed.

For the Texas A&M Aggies, 2025 could be their year. They are currently the only school in the SEC to be undefeated, with zero losses across all five active sports as of the piece’s publication.

The Aggies’ soccer program is currently 3-0-3, volleyball is 5-0, women’s golf and cross country both boast recent first-place finishes, and, of course, their No. 16 football program is currently 2-0 following wins over UTSA and Utah State.

However, the football Aggies’ biggest challenge is fast approaching on Saturday. They travel to South Bend, Indiana, this week to take on No. 8 Notre Dame. Regardless, several recent developments have caused the A&M future to continue shining bright.

Texas A&M Head Coach Mike Elko Provides Key Updates at Monday’s Press Conference

Monday marks the day of the Aggies’ weekly press conference at Kyle Field — head coach Mike Elko provided several key updates ahead of the big top-20 showdown.

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed scrambled out of a pocket, resulting in an injury that left him on the ground for several minutes as the training staff attended to him in Saturday’s most recent game against Utah State. He ended up leaving the game and not returning.

On Monday, A&M fans learned this was simply a precautionary measure and that Reed is “fine,” according to the head coach.

In addition, Elko also complimented his defense. It’s worth mentioning that Elko previously served as the defensive coordinator for A&M from 2018 until 2022, prior to his head coaching job at Duke, which eventually landed him returning to College Station, but this time as head coach.

So far this season, the Aggies have recorded 123 total tackles, 71 of which were solo and the remaining 52 assisted. They’ve also logged seven sacks for a total yard loss of 55, further complemented by three forced fumbles.

“We’ve had a really, really good run. I don’t know if I would call us D-Line University, but we’ve had a really, really good run,” said Elko. “Since I got here in ’18, we’ve had more D-linemen drafted in the NFL than any other team in the SEC.”

One of the most well-known defensive linemen to come out of A&M has been superstar defensive end Myles Garrett. With the Cleveland Browns since being drafted in 2017, Garrett was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick after spending his freshman and sophomore years with the Aggies.

Cashius Howell is a senior defensive lineman for A&M who could follow in Garrett’s footsteps. He was recently named the SEC’s Defensive Lineman of the Week and has already posted three sacks on the year.

While Aggies fans hope to see Reed back to 100% strength, they can rest assured that the defensive front will be swarming Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr as often as possible. Texas A&M kicks off against Notre Dame on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
