A hedge fund millionaire coaching in sleeveless shirts might sound like the setup to a sports movie, but Biff Poggi’s journey from Wall Street to Michigan’s sideline is very real. Now the former multimillionaire is stepping into the biggest moment of his coaching career, taking over as interim head coach while Sherrone Moore serves his suspension.
How Did a Hedge Fund Manager End Up Coaching Michigan?
Poggi’s story starts in 1986, when he was just a volunteer assistant coach trying to balance family life with his coaching dreams. His father-in-law changed everything by teaching him about Wall Street and investing the $25,000 that launched Samuel James Limited.
That investment became the foundation for something much bigger. Over thirty years, Poggi built Samuel James Limited into a powerhouse worth hundreds of millions of dollars. The whole time, he never stopped chasing his coaching dreams. Today, he has an estimated net worth of $10 million and reportedly earns $1 million a year coaching.
But Poggi didn’t just stumble into coaching success. He spent ten years paying his dues at the high school and college level, working in assistant roles at Brown, Temple, The Citadel, and Gilman School. In 1996, he got his big break when Gilman School made him their head coach.
What happened next was nothing short of dominant. Poggi spent 19 seasons at the Baltimore prep school as the head coach and won 13 state titles. That kind of success doesn’t go unnoticed, and it eventually opened doors at the next level.
Jim Harbaugh brought Poggi to Michigan as an analyst for 2016. After bouncing between high school coaching and college roles for several years, including another stop in Michigan. Poggi finally got his shot as a college head coach when Charlotte hired him for the 49ers program.
Poggi lasted just two seasons and finished with a 6-16 record, far from the success he’d enjoyed at Gilman School. The college game proved to be a different challenge entirely.
However, Michigan wasn’t done with Poggi. This past year, the Wolverines hired him as associate head coach. Now, with Moore facing a two-game suspension, the 65-year-old coach gets another chance to prove himself at the collegiate level.
