Courtney Vandersloot Sets the Record Straight About Sky Return After Angel Reese’s Infamous Comment

Sky veteran Courtney Vandersloot broke the silence after Angel Reese's viral comments with the Chicago Tribune.

Angel Reese found herself at the center of controversy after her candid interview with the Chicago Tribune sparked intense debate across the WNBA community. The Chicago Sky forward didn’t hold back when discussing her team’s future, including pointed comments about veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot that would ultimately cost her half a game.

Why Did Angel Reese’s Comments About Courtney Vandersloot Cause Such Backlash?

The fallout from Reese’s interview was swift and significant. The Sky organization suspended her for half a game, citing “detrimental” comments about the team. Fans and analysts questioned whether her criticisms should have remained behind closed doors rather than being aired publicly.

Reese’s most controversial remarks centered on the team’s reliance on aging veterans. Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, she said: “We can’t rely on Courtney to come back at the age that she’s at. I know she’ll be a great asset for us, but we can’t rely on that. We need someone probably a little younger with some experience, somebody who’s been playing the game and is willing to compete for a championship and has done it before.”

The young star made it clear she wanted a roster built around championship experience and younger talent. With the Sky struggling throughout the 2025 campaign, Reese’s comments suggested she might be open to joining a team that better aligns with her competitive vision.

These remarks about Vandersloot particularly resonated with fans and media, raising questions about potential locker room tensions within the organization.

Vandersloot responded to the controversy by addressing her future with the team directly. When asked about the 2026 season, she said: “Oh, absolutely. Contrary to what people say, or think, my age is actually not a factor. I am coming back. I’m going to come back better than ever, because that’s what I’ve done…I’ve put myself in the position to comeback and compete even at this age.”

The 36-year-oldĀ veteran notably chose not to address Reese’s comments directly, instead focusing on her determination to return stronger.

Before her injury this season, the 15-yearĀ veteran was averaging 10.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. After spending most of her career with Chicago, Vandersloot played two seasons with the New York Liberty (2023-24) before returning to the Sky in 2025.

Can Reese and the Chicago Sky Repair Their Relationship?

Following the intense backlash, Reese attempted to clarify her position and apologize to her teammates. The situation had clearly taken its toll on the young forward.

“I probably am frustrated [with] myself right now,” Reese said in a postgame conference. “I think the language is taken out of context. I really didn’t intentionally mean to put down my teammates, because they’ve been through this with me throughout the whole year.”

However, the damage was already done. The Sky organization moved quickly to suspend her shortly after the interview went public.

Fan reactions to both the comments and the suspension were decidedly mixed. While many agreed with the substance of Reese’s assessment, they felt she could have handled the situation more diplomatically. Others began speculating about a potential trade, wondering which teams might better suit Reese’s championship ambitions.

A significant portion of fans, however, believe that there’s no way back for Reese in Chicago. Even if she remains with the organization, questions persist about her chemistry with teammates and whether they’ll be motivated to play alongside her after these public criticisms.

The organization now faces a difficult decision. Trading Reese could bring back players who better fit their long-term vision, but it would also mean losing a talented young forward. Keeping her risks ongoing tension that could undermine team chemistry throughout the 2026 season.

With just two games remaining in the regular season, the Sky sit in 12th place with a disappointing 10-32 record, making Reese’s frustrations more understandable even if her method of expressing them proved controversial.
