Two tennis legends crossed paths with the defending champion in a moment that bridged generations at Flushing Meadows.
As Jannik Sinner prepared for another US Open final showdown, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors – whose own rivalry defined an era of American tennis – stopped by his practice session to share a conversation that tennis fans won’t soon forget.
How Did John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors’ Legendary Rivalry Shape Tennis History?
McEnroe and Connors share one of the most famous rivalries in tennis history. The two Americans battled each other 34 times between 1977 and 1991, with McEnroe leading their head-to-head record 20-14.
Their US Open battles became the stuff of legend. McEnroe and Connors faced off four times at Flushing Meadows – in 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1984. Connors managed just one victory in these encounters, taking the 1978 match, while McEnroe claimed the other three.
After hanging up their rackets, both transitioned seamlessly into commentary roles. At the 2025 US Open, both legends provide commentary for the tournament. During Sinner’s practice session ahead of his final against Carlos Alcaraz, they approached the Italian for a chat that captured the attention of tennis fans worldwide.

The relationship between McEnroe and Connors has evolved significantly since their playing days. While discussing their on-court rivalry, McEnroe acknowledged that although they didn’t like each other during their careers, he held deep respect for Connors and his relentless playing style.
“We don’t like each other, and I think that if we are in a room now, we could talk. We always had respect for each other. I always respected Jimmy Connors as far as the only guy that’s ever tried on a tennis court harder than Jimmy Connors is Rafael Nadal, in my book, and he’s not far behind,” McEnroe said.
McEnroe also expressed hope that their rivalry pushed both players to greater heights. “Every time I look in the mirror before I play him or someone else, I’d say to myself. ‘Am I trying as hard as Jimmy Connors?’ So I hope that I made him better, and I know he made me better,” he added.
The numbers speak to their individual greatness. McEnroe captured seven singles Grand Slam titles during his career, including four US Open crowns and three Wimbledon championships. He also claimed nine men’s doubles Major titles and one mixed doubles Grand Slam title, achieving the World No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles.
Meanwhile, Connors amassed eight Grand Slam singles titles, including five US Open victories, two Wimbledon championships, and one Australian Open title. He also secured doubles titles at Wimbledon and the US Open. Among his many accomplishments, he reached the World No. 1 singles ranking.
How Did Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz Set Up Their 2025 US Open Final Showdown?
Sinner entered the 2025 US Open as the top seed, beginning his title defense with impressive form. The Italian swept through the early rounds, defeating Vít Kopřiva, Alexei Popyrin, Denis Shapovalov, and Alexander Bublik.
The deeper rounds proved equally manageable for Sinner. He overcame Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals before securing his place in the final by defeating Félix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals.
Alcaraz’s path to the final showcased his own championship credentials. The second seed started strong, dispatching Reilly Opelka, Mattia Bellucci, Luciano Darderi, and Arthur Rinderknech in the opening rounds.
The Spaniard’s quarterfinal victory over Jiří Lehečka set up a blockbuster semifinal against Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz’s triumph over the Serbian legend earned him another shot at Sinner in a Grand Slam final.

Their most recent encounter came at the 2025 Cincinnati Open final, where Alcaraz claimed victory after Sinner retired due to illness, scoring 5-0. Now both players will look to add another Grand Slam title to their growing collections in what promises to be another classic chapter in their emerging rivalry.
