What Happened to Randy Moss? Breaking Down the Legendary WR’s Cancer Battle and Recently Announced Remission

After he first made his diagnosis public in December, Randy Moss shared an incredible update in his return to the Sunday NFL Countdown set.

Randy Moss is not only one of the greatest players to ever suit up in the NFL, but he is also one of the most influential players of his era, inspiring an entire generation of wide receivers to follow in his footsteps. After a legendary career that saw him earn a first ballot Hall of Fame induction, he did not step away from the game completely, transitioning into life as a studio analyst for ESPN on their Sunday NFL and Monday Night Countdown shows.

A 14-year career saw him suit up for a number of franchises, maintaining his efficacy with each of them. Second all-time on the all-time touchdown leaderboard, he was a member of the 2000s All-Decade Team and the NFL’s 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. However, for the better part of the last year, Moss has been in a taxing battle with cancer. A process that began in December finally saw its fruits this weekend as the six-time Pro Bowler delivered wonderful news to football fans across the globe.

Randy Moss Is Back!

Last December, the former New England Patriots superstar revealed that he was suffering from Stage 2 bile duct cancer. He underwent Whipple procedure, before starting radiation and chemotherapy to counteract his ailment.

He made a one-time return during Super Bowl weekend. However, the first week of the 2025 season marks the full-time return of a beloved figure from the NFL. Before he returned to set for the first Sunday of football action, he delivered a momentous update.

The record holder for most touchdowns in a single season rang the bell at Atrium Health in Charlotte, North Carolina, to signify the end of his cancer treatment as he officially entered remission.

As he returned to the desk, he had immense gratitude for the people around him. “It was just a great day, man, shout out and love to my doctors, I remember seeing you guys on Super Bowl Sunday, and that was one of my goals to get here, and now all my treatment is over, ringing the bell, back with the family, man.”

Recalling the hardships he went through, he revealed the emotional blow of first finding out about his condition. “I just think that when you live your life, you know, a certain type of way of, you know, eating right, taking care of your health, and all of a sudden you get diagnosed with cancer … I was overwhelmed. It hit like a ton of bricks.”

But through rigorous treatment, constant care, and attention, Moss has overcome his battle. Now, he’s ready to grace our screens once again and give back to the game that we all know and love.
