Auburn coach Bruce Pearl sees his point guard stepping into a different role this season. After Tahaad Pettiford’s impressive freshman campaign helped the Tigers reach the Final Four, Pearl knows defenses will game-plan specifically to stop his rising star. The challenge? Maintaining that same efficiency while carrying a much heavier load for Auburn’s championship hopes.
How Does Bruce Pearl Rank Tahaad Pettiford Among Last Season’s Top Freshmen?
Pearl didn’t hold back when discussing his guard’s freshman impact. In a CBS Sports interview, the Auburn coach placed Pettiford among the top five freshmen nationally despite his recruiting ranking falling between 20 and 30.
“Don’t forget Tahaad Pettiford was a kid that was ranked, let’s say, 20 to 25, maybe even 25 to 30 when it comes to your top freshman,” Pearl explained. “You probably put him amongst five freshmen last year as far of the most effective players, not necessarily about draft, but to me, he’s on the top five in the freshmen last year, with Cooper Flagg obviously being number one.”
That comparison carries serious weight, considering Flagg had one of the greatest freshman seasons in college basketball history. Pearl’s assessment reflects how Pettiford exceeded expectations while averaging 11.6 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.2 rebounds on efficient shooting.
The perfect storm that helped Pettiford flourish as a freshman won’t exist this season. Pearl acknowledged how his guard benefited from playing alongside veteran leaders who could share the spotlight.
“The issue is going to be he’s going to get all the attention,” Pearl said. “Last year, as a freshman, it was sort of a perfect storm for him to come in and play off of all those seniors and the veterans that we had, and he did an amazing job.”
What New Responsibilities Must Pettiford Handle as Auburn’s Floor General?
Pearl expects his sophomore guard to handle much more challenging situations this season. The coach outlined specific areas where Pettiford must develop beyond his statistical production, particularly in leadership and decision-making under pressure.
“His leadership is going to be something that he’s going to have to be more vocal, so on and so forth,” Pearl noted. “More will be expected of him. He’s going to have to take and make more tougher shots, be more of a playmaker.”
These expanded responsibilities will likely impact Pettiford’s efficiency numbers. Pearl admitted the increased playmaking duties and more difficult shot attempts will probably lead to more turnovers, but believes the challenge will accelerate his development.
The Jersey City native tested NBA Draft waters after his freshman season before withdrawing his name based on scout feedback. That decision positioned him as Auburn’s primary floor general for the 2025-26 campaign, a role that demands much more than scoring.

As a freshman, Pettiford showed he could adapt quickly to college basketball, earning Pearl’s confidence in him for this bigger role. Now, the test becomes whether he can maintain his effectiveness while shouldering increased responsibility as Auburn chases another deep tournament run.
Pearl’s confidence in Pettiford stems from watching him exceed expectations throughout his freshman year. The challenge involves proving that the breakout season wasn’t just the result of favorable circumstances, but the beginning of something bigger for both player and program.
