Billionaire Oilers Owner’s Feelings on Connor McDavid’s Holdup in Contract Negotiations Come to Light

Despite delayed contract negotiations between the Oilers and Connor McDavid, top boss not worried about the captain's future with the team

Connor McDavid’s contract situation has become the defining storyline of Edmonton’s season.

The 28-year-old superstar is approaching the final year of his eight-year, $100 million deal, and Oilers fans can’t stop wondering when–or if–he’ll commit long-term to the franchise that drafted him first nearly a decade ago.

Will Connor McDavid’s Next Deal Keep Him in Edmonton?

Rumors have been swirling around McDavid’s next contract, suggesting a shorter three- or four-year deal worth approximately $16.5 million annually. However, until McDavid puts pen to paper, speculation will continue dominating the rumor mill.

In the meantime, the Oilers are confident that their franchise cornerstone will stay put, but the uncertainty creates an undeniable tension around the team’s future.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for Edmonton management. They desperately want to ensure McDavid continues leading their Stanley Cup charge, but ultimately, the decision belongs entirely to the generational talent.

Franchise owner Daryl Katz, whose net worth is at $6 billion per Forbes’ estimates, has reportedly shown unwavering confidence in keeping the team captain in an Oilers uniform.

Why Aren’t the Oilers Worried About McDavid’s Contract Delay?

Despite widespread speculation around McDavid’s future, Edmonton’s leadership has maintained a surprisingly calm approach to the negotiations. CEO Jeff Jackson addressed these concerns during an appearance on the ‘Oilers Now’ show, explaining the organization’s mindset.

“I know there are sort of lots of commentary on the fact that Connor is not yet signed and why he hasn’t signed yet,” Jackson said. “Stan [Bowman] and I, and (owner) Daryl Katz and the rest of the management group, we don’t feel that way, we’re not nervous about it.”

The executive team’s confidence reflects the organization’s belief that McDavid’s commitment to Edmonton runs deeper than contract timelines. However, not everyone shares that optimism about the captain’s future.

What Concerns Could Influence McDavid’s Decision?

TSN’s Chris Johnston raised legitimate questions about Edmonton’s long-term competitiveness, suggesting McDavid might be wrestling with concerns about the team’s aging core. Johnston highlighted a troubling timeline that could impact the captain’s championship window.

“If you look at the way the Oilers are constructed, there could be some reasons for concern in two or three or four or five years’ time,” Johnston explained on ‘First Up.’ ”

That team kind of ages out just because they don’t have a lot of younger talent coming, and there’s uncertainty there.”

This analysis touches on a critical factor in McDavid’s decision-making process. The possibility of Edmonton’s current roster aging out just as McDavid enters his prime years presents a genuine dilemma for someone whose primary goal remains winning a Stanley Cup.

McDavid himself has been transparent about his championship aspirations while acknowledging the careful consideration required for such a significant decision. Speaking at the Team Canada Camp in Calgary, he emphasized both his commitment to winning in Edmonton and his methodical approach to the contract process.

“I’ll take my time and go through everything. I have every intention to win in Edmonton. It’s my only focus, maybe next to winning a gold medal with Canada,” McDavid said. “I’ll take my time going through it with my family, my agent, and everybody involved. We’re going through it slowly.”

McDavid’s next contract would likely become the NHL’s largest deal in history. The hockey community will watch anxiously as negotiations continue between Edmonton’s management and their franchise player, knowing that the outcome will shape both McDavid’s legacy and the Oilers’ championship hopes for years to come.
