The US Open 2025 delivered starkly different outcomes for tennis’s most celebrated power couple. Their public plea for a mixed doubles wildcard may have been denied, but their journeys told two different stories in New York.

How Did Katie Boulter and Alex de Minaur Fare in Their 2025 US Open Singles Campaigns?

Katie Boulter’s US Open campaign ended abruptly in the opening round, marking her first first-round loss in four years. The world No. 48 faced a challenging draw against 27th seed Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine, ultimately falling 6-4, 6-4. This early exit will cause Boulter to drop outside the world’s top 50 rankings.

The match revealed patterns concerning Boulter’s game. Despite creating numerous opportunities with 10 break points throughout the contest, she converted only two of them. Her serving struggles proved equally problematic, as she registered eight double faults during the two-set defeat.

“We’ve been trying so many different things, but nothing is quite working yet,” Boulter admitted after the loss, acknowledging the persistent serving issues plaguing her recent performances.

However, Boulter found some consolation in women’s doubles. Partnering with Sonay Kartal, the British duo claimed victory in their opening match across three sets. Their run concluded in the second round when they fell to the 12th-seeded pair of Zhang Shuai and Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Meanwhile, eighth seed Alex de Minaur showcased the form that has made him one of the tour’s most consistent performers. The Australian advanced to the fourth round for the fifth time in nine US Open appearances, demonstrating his growing comfort on the New York hardcourts.

De Minaur’s path to the quarterfinals included straight-set victories over Christopher O’Connell and Shintaro Mochizuki, followed by an advancement when Daniel Altmaier retired due to injury in the third round. At the time of Altmaier’s withdrawal, de Minaur held a commanding position at 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-4, 2-0.

The fourth round brought Swiss qualifier Leandro Riedi, ranked 435th worldwide. De Minaur delivered a masterclass performance, dismantling his opponent 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in just over 90 minutes. This dominant display propelled him into his sixth Grand Slam quarterfinal and third of the 2025 season.

Despite reaching the quarterfinals multiple times, de Minaur has yet to win a single set at this stage of a Grand Slam. His quarterfinal opponent, Felix Auger-Aliassime, represents another opportunity to break through that barrier.

What Made Their Mixed Doubles Wildcard Request So Public?

The couple generated significant attention when publicly campaigning for a mixed doubles wildcard at the 2025 US Open. De Minaur took to social media with a playful yet earnest request, tweeting: “Katie and I would like to ask for a WC pretty pretty please 🙏😢” after the tournament announced 14 teams with two wildcards still available.

Despite their combined singles rankings and public appeal, the US Open organizers declined to award them a wildcard. Instead, the coveted spots went to pairs featuring Venus Williams with Reilly Opelka and Emma Raducanu with Carlos Alcaraz.

How Did This Tennis Power Couple Make History?

Boulter and de Minaur have redefined what it means to be a tennis power couple, making history twice in 2024 by winning titles on the same day. Their first synchronized success came in March, when de Minaur captured the Acapulco title while Boulter triumphed in San Diego.

The remarkable feat was repeated in June, with de Minaur claiming victory at the Libema Open as Boulter successfully defended her Nottingham title. The Australian couldn’t contain his amazement, posting on social media: “You are a joke!!!” Boulter playfully responded, asking, “Let me have the limelight for once.”

Their relationship began in March 2020 after a chance encounter at a hotel where both were staying. Boulter recalled how they “bumped into each other at six in the morning and ended up getting a coffee,” instantly knowing she was “in it for the long haul.”

The couple initially kept their relationship private, going so far as to eat breakfast at separate tables to avoid being spotted together. They went public in 2021 and announced their engagement on December 23, 2024.

With 28 hard-court wins in 2025, de Minaur leads the tour in victories on that surface, underlining his continued excellence on his preferred playing conditions. As he prepares for his quarterfinal showdown with Auger-Aliassime, he and Boulter continue navigating the unique challenges of balancing elite professional tennis careers with their personal relationship.
