What Happened to Rhamondre Stevenson? Latest Injury Update and Week 1 Availability for the Patriots RB?

Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson is battling a minor injury, but will he be ready for Week 1 vs. the Raiders? Here's the latest update.

The New England Patriots have dealt with plenty of roster questions in recent years, but Rhamondre Stevenson has been one of the constants. That’s why his absence in the preseason finale raised some eyebrows. Was it something serious, or just precautionary as Week 1 approaches?

Is Rhamondre Stevenson Really in Danger of Missing Week 1?

Stevenson didn’t suit up against the New York Giants in the preseason and even showed up at practice in a non-contact jersey. On the surface, that sounds concerning. But those close to the team, including Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, have made it clear that the injury isn’t expected to keep him out once the regular season kicks off.

Head coach Mike Vrabel echoed the same earlier in August, telling reporters that the issue isn’t “considered significant.” He added that there’s no expectation of a long-term absence. Unless something changes on the official injury report, Stevenson should be in the lineup when New England hosts the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

How the Patriots Plan To Use Their RB Trio

The Patriots also dropped their first unofficial depth chart, and there were no surprises, Stevenson remains the lead back. Rookie TreVeyon Henderson, their second-round pick out of Ohio State, sits right behind him, while Antonio Gibson provides veteran depth.

It’s an intriguing mix. Henderson has the explosiveness that could change games in a single carry, Gibson offers versatility as both a runner and receiver, and Stevenson is the steady presence who can grind out tough yards. As long as he’s healthy, Stevenson is the one expected to shoulder the bulk of the work.

Why Rhamondre Stevenson’s Role Still Matters in 2025?

New England won just four games last season, and the offense often sputtered. That’s why Stevenson’s availability carries so much weight. He piled up 801 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in 2024, and across his career, he’s topped 3,000 yards with 21 scores.

Those numbers won’t blow anyone away, but they show reliability. In a year where the Patriots may lean heavily on their running game while trying to figure out their passing attack, Stevenson’s presence is crucial.

If the current reporting proves right, the injury will fade into the background once Week 1 begins. But if it lingers, Henderson could see his workload climb sooner than expected, a scenario New England would rather avoid this early in the season. Either way, Stevenson’s health is one of the biggest early storylines for New England’s 2025 campaign.
