Venus Williams has weighed in on the fiery post-match altercation between Taylor Townsend and Jeļena Ostapenko at the 2025 US Open, praising the American for her maturity and composure during what she described as “a situation that was not so classy.”
Williams emphasized that Townsend’s reaction not only showcased her professionalism, but also reflected the strength she carries as both an athlete and a mother.
How Did Venus Williams React to the Drama Between Taylor Townsend and Jeļena Ostapenko at the US Open?
The controversial moment unfolded on Court 11 when Townsend upset No. 25 seed Ostapenko 7-5, 6-1 in the second round. Instead of a routine handshake, the two engaged in a tense verbal exchange that drew loud boos from the crowd directed at Ostapenko.
Townsend later revealed that her opponent accused her of having “no class” and “no education,” while also making a remark about “seeing what happens outside the U.S.” The incident quickly overshadowed what should have been a celebratory moment for Townsend and became one of the tournament’s most talked-about controversies.

Ostapenko later attempted to justify her behavior on Instagram, saying she felt disrespected by Townsend during the match, but her defense only added more fuel to the ongoing debate about her contentious on-court demeanor.
Speaking after her own second-round doubles win with partner Leylah Fernandez, Williams was asked to weigh in on Ostapenko’s comments about Townsend. The 45-year-old was quick to show support, highlighting Townsend’s grace under pressure, especially as a mother.
“It was a lot of drama, and I thought Taylor handled it amazing,” Williams told reporters. “I just thought with her as a mom, how she handled it. Her son will be watching. She handled it with class, a situation that was not so classy, and just moved on and won again. So she’s handling it amazing. I’m rooting for her. She’s a wonderful person, great mom, and I hope she can keep going.”
Following the incident, Townsend went on to defeat fifth seed Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-2 to reach the Round of 16 in singles for the second time in New York, where she will face 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejčíková.
In doubles, she and her partner Kateřina Siniaková reached the third round, where the top seeds will take on either Anna Blinkova/Magdalena Fręch or Camila Osorio/Yue Yuan.
Meanwhile, Williams and Fernandez also reached the third round, where they will take on either No. 12 seeds Zhang Shuai/Ekaterina Alexandrova or Sonay Kartal/Katie Boulter.
