The fallout from the Dallas Cowboys’ blockbuster trade of four-time Pro Bowler Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers is getting more complicated. What looked like a simple football business decision reveals deeper locker room tensions that Cowboys fans didn’t see coming. Dallas owner-general manager Jerry Jones defended the move in his Aug. 28 press conference, but new details suggest the trade was about more than just money.
Why Did Micah Parsons Rub His Cowboys Teammates the Wrong Way?
Parsons, who signed a four-year, $188 million contract ($120 million guaranteed) with the Packers, apparently caused friction with some teammates during his time in Dallas. A new report detailing how the Parsons trade actually went down behind the scenes paints that picture.
The Cowboys handled contract negotiations with starting quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and Zack Martin quite differently than they did with Parsons. The approach tells a story about how the organization viewed each player.
“Once the team arrived in California for camp in 2023 and ’24, their negotiations were put on the back burner, the same way Parsons’s were this summer,” Sports Illustrated NFL Insider Albert Breer reported on Friday, Aug. 29. “Basically sending the message that if a deal isn’t done that works for the team early, the player has to wait.
“That said, there is a difference between this negotiation and the previous three,” Breer wrote. “Martin, Lamb and Prescott are/were very popular in the locker room.
“That’s not the case with Parsons, who has rankled teammates in different ways, seen by some as egotistical and self-centered,” Breer wrote. “His [Parsons] podcast has created issues, too, that go all the way up to quarterback Dak Prescott.”
The podcast conflicts with Prescott adds another layer to this story. When your franchise quarterback has problems with how you handle media responsibilities, that creates organizational headaches no team wants to manage.
How Will These Revelations Change Cowboys Fans’ Perspective?
In the deal with Green Bay, the Cowboys received defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two first-round draft choices in the 2026 and 2027 NFL drafts. Clark met the Dallas media for the first time on Friday, stating that he was happy to be with the Cowboys and was ready to get to work.
Jones had plenty to say about dealing with Parsons, including taking a dig at his former superstar. Jones believes that Clark, along with those draft picks, will help the Cowboys get better now and in the future.

However, knowing that tensions existed between Parsons and some of his teammates, including a high-profile player like Prescott, might give Dallas fans reason to reconsider their emotional responses to this trade. Parsons was beloved by those dedicated Cowboys fans who saw him as a cornerstone of the franchise.
The real test comes when Green Bay visits Dallas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Sunday, Sept. 28. With Parsons now anchoring the Packers’ defensive line at defensive end, the game will be played on primetime TV as one of NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” telecasts. Talk about must-see television for a fan base still processing this shocking trade.
