How Did Fans React to Iga Świątek’s Frustration During Her US Open Press Conference?

Świątek battled through a challenging second-round match against Suzan Lamens in front of the Arthur Ashe crowd, but her resilience helped her win. She took the first set 6-1, dropped the second 4-6, but came back to win the third 6-4, advancing to the third round.

Although Świątek may have felt relieved after her win, an unexpected question at her post-match press conference clearly struck a nerve. While responding in Polish, the World No. 2 was asked by a reporter named Tomek Moczerniuk if she had ever considered wearing beads in her hair in New York.

“What kind of question is this? I’m sorry. Did you think about putting beads in your hair? No. What’s going on here?” She said in response.

The question not only annoyed Świątek but also drew support from several fans who rallied behind her. One fan wrote:

“genuinely what the hell is this 😭 these players go through rigorous amount of training, battle it out on the court, then deal with questions like this?”

“Imagine tussling against Lamens in R2 and then having to answer this kind of questions 😭 I would just quit,” a fan echoed the previous fan’s sentiments.

A fan playfully suggested creating a thread compiling the most absurd press conference questions, admitting they were too lazy to search themselves.

“I need someone to make a thread with the most absurd questions at these conferences.”

Here are a few more reactions from the fans:

“She has the patience of an angel,” one said.

“her reaction is so real why are they so unserious,” another chimed in.

Following the controversy, the journalist, reportedly from Przegląd Sportowy, explained that he had posed the question in an attempt to add a playful element to what had already been an awkward press conference.

Notably, the Pole had earlier been pressed on the heated US Open incident between Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko. Ultimately, the journalist expressed regret in a statement shared on X and issued an apology.

What’s Next for Świątek at the 2025 US Open?

Although the press conference may have been awkward for Świątek, she will look to quickly move on and focus on the rest of her US Open campaign. The former champion is set to face a challenging opponent in the 29th seed Anna Kalinskaya, promising an intriguing matchup.

Their head-to-head currently stands at 1-1, but Świątek might hold the edge, having triumphed at Wimbledon. She also won the Cincinnati Open, where she notably defeated Kalinskaya. The competition will only get tougher from here, with the winner set to face either Ekaterina Alexandrova or Laura Siegemund in the fourth round.
