A Lee County Circuit Court has dismissed the domestic violence charges against Auburn sophomore wide receiver Malcolm Simmons.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Simmons was arrested on July 16. Court documents accused him of strangling his girlfriend during a physical altercation. It’s being reported that all charges have since been dropped and that Simmons is able fully participate in team activities.
Simmons was previously cleared for practice, which began on July 30 ahead of Auburn opening its season against the Baylor Bears on Aug. 29.
Simmons recorded 40 passes for 451 yards and three touchdowns over 12 games as a freshman in 2024.

According to Yahoo Sports, many college football fans were calling for Simmons to be suspended or face harsh punishments from Auburn. However, the university did not rush to suspend Simmons, and as a result of the dismissal of the case, Simmons will be eligible to play in Auburn’s season opener against Baylor.
The Tigers will also face the likes of No. 18 Oklahoma, No. 19 Texas A&M and No. 5 Georgia during the 2025 season.

This latest development comes after Simmons’ defense team had applied for youthful offender status during the Alabama native’s preliminary hearing.
The receiver, standing at 6’0″ and weighing 186 pounds, is projected to to be a key starter for the Tigers this fall.
Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze also recently said to the media that Simmons is cleared to participate.
“Based on the information that I’ve been given from our campus administration who have knowledge of the matter, he’s been cleared to participate in team activities,” Freeze said. “Like I said earlier, based on the information I’ve been given from the administration, [Simmons] is cleared to practice and that’s all the information I have.”

Simmons’ 2024 yardage total ranked him fifth in school history among Auburn’s freshman receivers. He committed to the Tigers after a senior year where he served as a team captain who led Coach Smitty Grider’s Benjamin Russell High Wildcats to the Class 6A quarterfinals and a regional title.
