‘Overrated’ – WNBA Fans Turn Against Wings Star Paige Bueckers After Dismal 9-Point Game

After Paige Bueckers' disappointing string of games since her career night, the Dallas Wings guard faces harsh criticism from the fans.

The world of professional sports is relentless, and the WNBA is no different. The loss against the Los Angeles Sparks marked the Dallas Wings’ elimination from playoff contention but signaled that the future is bright. However, the optimism hasn’t taken long to fade as fans now appear frustrated with Paige Bueckers.

While fans revered Bueckers for her monstrous career night in Los Angeles just days back, the performances that have followed have attracted harsh criticism from the fanbase.

How Did Paige Bueckers Follow Up Her Career Night Against Sparks?

Bueckers followed up her 44-point performance against the Sparks with just 11 points against the Seattle Storm. Things were worse against the Golden State Valkyries, where Bueckers managed just nine points with a miserable 25% shooting (3-of-12). While there was improvement in the playmaking department, the nine assists weren’t enough to silence critics as fans tore into the rookie. “Overrated,” said one fan.

However, Bueckers’ drop in production could also be attributed to the increased attention defenses are giving the Wings guard since her career night. This defensive focus is unlikely to decrease as Bueckers is geared to be a star in the league for many years to come.

“Now she’s seeing defenses and blitzes that CC sees every night,” another fan said.

What Are Fans Saying About Bueckers’ Growing Pains?

Other fans reminded everyone that, despite being very talented, Bueckers is still only a rookie learning to navigate professional basketball. “Great player but also very young player. Will bounce back big,” said one supporter.

Another fan even joked, “She should’ve never scored that 44 points,” as the defensive attention that has followed has made life difficult for Bueckers. The 11-point performance ended her streak of 30 consecutive games with double-digit points to start her career, which was the third-longest such streak by a rookie in WNBA history.

The game against the Valkyries had a silver lining for Bueckers. Her nine assists showcased good court vision and decision-making, freeing up her teammates despite facing double teams. The UConn alum is still adapting to the professional level, and her career-high performance last week proves she’s doing it well.

The 2024-25 season still has six games remaining, and while the Wings could not make the playoffs this year, Bueckers will be looking to lead her team to postseason success in the 2025-26 campaign. With Bueckers and the Wings expected to be back with a bang next year, it will be interesting to see how the organization surrounds their star as Dallas looks to build on this season’s positive signs.
