‘There Are Egos Involved’ – Kelsey Plum Breaks Silence on Shocking Exit From Aces After 7 Years

Kelsey Plum’s stunning move to the Sparks shook WNBA offseason. Now, the star guard finally revealed the real reason behind her surprising exit from the Aces.

The 2025 WNBA offseason witnessed several blockbuster moves as teams scrambled to strengthen their rosters for another competitive campaign. Among the most jaw-dropping transactions was the three-team trade that sent Kelsey Plum from the Las Vegas Aces to the Los Angeles Sparks, which ended a seven-year relationship that had produced back-to-back championships.

Now the All-Star guard has finally lifted the curtain on the real reason behind her departure.

Why Did Kelsey Plum Really Leave the Las Vegas Aces?

In the latest episode of the “Bird’s Eye View” podcast, Plum dropped a bombshell that put her departure into perspective. Without sugarcoating, she admitted that her decision wasn’t just about basketball tactics or salary cap maneuvers. According to Plum, it was deeply personal.

“You have the basketball element. It’s not about shots or points. It’s just more of a feeling… Yeah, I can set cross screens and back screens for A’ja all day, no problem. But then you feel, ‘Am I becoming the fourth option?’ We’re not winning, so that also feels frustrating. There are egos involved. Again, it’s not just me; that’s what happens when you play on a team with a ton of people that are budding stars…”

The frustration ran deeper than just her role on the court. Plum felt her potential was being limited, despite her championship pedigree and proven ability to lead.

“I felt like I needed a fresh start. I need a fresh start personally. I need a fresh start professionally. I felt like my growth was kind of capped in Vegas. I could finish my career in Vegas and be an All-Star a couple more times, try to go back with championships, but can I ever reach the capacity of the player I know I can be? You go back to the confidence because you know you have a lot left in the tank. And I know I can lead. Just that the opportunity is not here,” Plum said to the host of the podcast, Sue Bird.

Plum’s journey with the Aces started in 2017 when the team (then named the San Antonio Stars drafted her first overall in the 2017 WNBA Draft. Over her seven-year tenure in Las Vegas, she built a résumé few could match. It included back-to-back WNBA championships in 2022 and 2023, WNBA All-Star Game MVP in 2022, three consecutive All-Star selections (2022-2024), and All-WNBA First Team honors in 2022.

Moreover, her stats of 14.3 points, four assists, and 2.5 rebounds in 234 games with the Aces tell the story of a player who evolved from a bench contributor to one of the league’s most lethal offensive threats.

What Signs Pointed to Plum’s Departure Before the Trade?

So when news of her exit broke, fans were stunned. Yet not everyone was blindsided. Some WNBA analysts had long suspected that tensions were brewing in Las Vegas and that Plum might eventually seek a fresh start.

“It does seem like the most likely scenario is that Kelsey Plum would move on from the Aces. You mentioned that she did not sign an extension. And former general manager Natalie Williams told me before she and the Aces parted ways that Kelsey was offered an extension and declined,” said analyst Callie Fin during an interview in January.

The WNBA star also spoke about her former teammate A’ja Wilson. The pair led the Aces franchise to two consecutive WNBA titles.

Plum said, “She shows up every game. There are players who, when you’re talented, you can kind of coast. But she’s a competitor. When the game’s on the line, she wants the ball. She’s someone that in big moments gets even bigger. And I’ve always respected and admired that.”

Although the pair are rivals now, they share the close bond they developed in Las Vegas. They are heading in different directions now, but after sharing the locker room on a championship team, it would be safe to say that they will always have the same admiration for each other.
