How Will ESPN’s New Scoreboard Change the Milton vs. Buford Broadcast?

ESPN kicked off the 2025 high school football season by spotlighting the Milton Eagles and the Buford Wolves, locking them in as its featured matchup. On Thursday night at Phillip Beard Stadium, the No. 10 Buford Wolves opened the 2025 Georgia high school football season with a 20-13 win over the No. 15 Milton Eagles.

The setting had fans buzzing as Buford’s state-of-the-art, $62 million stadium debuted, drawing attention locally and from sports circles nationwide.

The action on the field was intense. Milton quarterback Derrick Baker threw two interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown in the third quarter, which helped Buford seize momentum.

The stadium crowd was locked in, but viewers at home were just as captivated, thanks to ESPN’s unveiling of a redesigned scorecard display during the broadcast.

Following this thrilling contest, ESPN’s fresh scoreboard look during the Milton Eagles vs. Buford Wolves game made a quick impression. The update included sharper graphics, cleaner visuals, and easier-to-follow information; fans responded immediately.

Fans wasted no time weighing in. “So much better,” one viewer wrote. Another added, “Pretty good.”

“I dig it,” a fan quipped. “Okay this one’s good let’s see if it lasts more than a year now,” another remarked.

What Does ESPN’s Broadcast Upgrade Mean for College Football Fans?

With all eyes on the debut, the scoreboard launch exceeded this matchup. Network insiders say the same scoreboard package will be featured in the upcoming college football season. This move continues ESPN’s push for a modern presentation, a trend built since the summer.

It’s not the first time ESPN has timed a visual overhaul with a larger strategy. In the 2024 season, the College Football Playoff broadcast ran with the campaign, “there’s never been a playoff like this.”

That effort brought a bigger playoff format and fresh production style, working to tie everything together for viewers with a unique visual identity, consistent marketing, and storytelling.

The process for retooling the scoreboard got underway early this summer, with several departments– branding, programming, and live coverage– all collaborating. ESPN Creative Studio took the lead, ensuring a clear message and look across every platform and type of coverage.

“We have a whole new 12-team bracket experience. It’s a completely new fan experience,” said Marissa Dempsey, senior manager, creative strategy and integration at ESPN Creative Studio. “Part of the strategy is really understanding what that means, what the education strategy is for the fan as it relates to the overall creative strategy for the brand.”

The creative team focused on getting all of ESPN’s business divisions involved– marketing, programming, content, digital, and more. “Within that creative strategy process, we partner with all teams across the business. That’s our marketing team, programming, content, digital, et cetera,” Dempsey said.

As the football season gets started, strong reaction from fans and an expanded rollout planned for college games make it clear: ESPN’s updated scoreboard will be a go-to piece of the network’s 2025 football coverage.
