‘Has A Sniper’ – NHL World Reacts As Alex Ovechkin’s Son Sergei Goes Viral For On-Ice Prowess

It’s not every day a six-year-old grabs the spotlight at a star-studded hockey showcase. But Sergei Ovechkin made the Ovi Cup Gala in Moscow all about him, outscoring NHL pros and making his dad beam from the bench. From the first whistle at Mytishchi Arena, everyone came to see Alex Ovechkin, but left talking about Sergei’s four-goal explosion. How did a first grader take over the rink with some of hockey’s biggest names watching?

How Did Sergei Ovechkin Steal the Show at the Ovi Cup?

It was Sergei, not his father Alex, who dominated the recent Ovi Cup Gala match. He scored four goals, leading his squad to an 11-7 win over Pavel Datsyuk’s team, while Alex added one. Sergei, also known as Ovi Jr., picked up half his points in the first period, showing early on that he wasn’t just out there for fun.

Thanks to his performance, Sergei’s skills have become a hot topic online. League fans are flooding social media with highlights and reactions.

The Ovi Cup is an annual youth hockey tournament named after the Washington Capitals’ captain. It features more than 20 youth teams from Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, making it a prime spot for up-and-comers to make their mark.

During the event, Sergei scored his first-period goal against New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin. That moment set social feeds buzzing:

“Has a sniper just like pops,” one fan posted on X. Another added, “The laces and skate tounges out just like dad. Awesome,” showing off the obvious Ovechkin family flair.

In the stands, Sergei’s mother Nastya and grandmother Tatyana cheered both him and Alex on, clearly loving every second of the family’s big moment.

Sergei has been skating since December 2020 and will be eligible for the NHL Draft in 2036. This marked his third straight visit to the Ovi Cup, cementing his status as a rising star.

Fans kept the hype going all weekend:

The CSKA youth team took home the Ovi Cup title this year after beating the Ak Bars youth team in the final. Alex Ovechkin handed them the championship trophy, bringing things full circle.

After watching Sergei’s highlight reel, one fan summed it up: “Hockey is a beautiful sport,” tweeting about the family’s unforgettable night in Moscow.
