The Indianapolis Colts will take the field in 2025Â with more than just victory in mind. They’ll be honoring the memory of one of the NFL’s most colorful and beloved owners.
After team owner Jim Irsay’s passing in May, the franchise unveiled a jersey patch tribute and a season-long series of honors dedicated to preserving his legacy.
How Will the Colts Honor Jim Irsay With Their Jersey Patch?
In May, the Colts revealed a commemorative jersey patch to be worn throughout the 2025 preseason, regular season, and even on practice uniforms. The black oval patch features Irsay’s initials “JI” in bold white lettering and his signature stitched across the center.

True to his personal touch, the patch includes a smiley face, a hallmark of Irsay’s autographs on footballs, photos, and even currency. The patch is outlined with seven grommets, symbolically connecting to the Colts’ horseshoe logo, which also features seven grommets.
The patch not only pays tribute to Irsay’s personal flair but also reflects the deep appreciation the Colts organization has for his decades of leadership and his impact on the NFL as a whole.
What Legacy Did Jim Irsay Leave Behind?
Jim Irsay, who died on May 21, 2025, at the age of 65 in Beverly Hills, California, leaves behind a legacy of dedication, resilience, and vision. He became the NFL’s youngest general manager at just 25 years old in 1984 and officially took over as principal owner in 1997Â following his father’s passing.
Under his leadership, the Colts entered a golden era highlighted by quarterback Peyton Manning, a win in Super Bowl XLI, and another appearance in Super Bowl XLIV. In total, the Colts earned 16 playoff appearances, two AFC championships, and a reputation for excellence during Irsay’s time at the helm.
Despite health issues and personal battles, Irsay remained one of the NFL’s most passionate and outspoken owners, earning respect from players, staff, and fans alike.
When Will the Colts Honor Irsay With Ring of Honor Induction?
The Colts will further immortalize Jim Irsay by inducting him into the franchise’s Ring of Honor during their Week 1 game against the Miami Dolphins. Fittingly, this tribute was announced on what would have been Irsay’s 66th birthday in June. This emotional moment is expected to unite Colts fans and players in celebrating a man who gave his life to football.

Following Irsay’s passing, the Colts announced a formal succession plan. This ensures the Irsay legacy remains tightly woven into the Colts’ future.
