Candace Parker Warns WNBA Teams of ‘Scary’ Caitlin Clark After Fever Star’s Lengthy Injury Absence

Candace Parker believes Caitlin Clark's time away from the Indiana Fever will make her return even more dangerous for opposing WNBA teams.

The Indiana Fever were riding high with five straight wins, and fans were finally believing this team had found its rhythm. Then reality hit hard on August 5, when the Los Angeles Sparks handed them a crushing 100-91 defeat that brought their winning streak to a screeching halt.

The loss marked the eighth consecutive game without Caitlin Clark, who remains sidelined with a lingering groin injury. While concerns mount about her uncertain return timeline, one WNBA legend sees this extended absence differently. She’s not worried about Clark missing time. She’s excited about what happens when she comes back.

Why Does Candace Parker Think Clark’s Absence Makes the Fever Scarier?

Three-time WNBA champion Candace Parker delivered a warning to the rest of the league during the latest episode of her podcast “Post Moves with Candace Parker and Aliyah Boston.” Rather than viewing Clark’s injury as a setback, Parker believes the extended time away could be exactly what the Fever need.

“Caitlin is one of those people that has a high IQ. So, I know she’s watching, and I know she’s going to come back and make you all that much better. So, it honestly is scary because not only are you allowing other people to step up, but you’re allowing Caitlin to then survey and realize, oh, she can add. I said from the get-go, Indiana Fever’s scary,” said Parker during the podcast.

Parker’s perspective stands in stark contrast to recent commentary from ESPN’s Carolyn Peck. The former Purdue coach, who led the Boilermakers to the 1999 national championship, made headlines weeks earlier during a SportsCenter segment by suggesting the Fever actually perform better without their star player.

“I think that Indiana is even more dangerous when Caitlin Clark doesn’t play because she’s a ball-dominant guard. The ball’s in her hands a lot, so you know what you need to try to take away,” said Peck during the segment.

What Do the Numbers Reveal About Clark’s True Impact?

While Peck’s analysis suggests the team functions better without Clark, the numbers paint a more complex picture. When Clark has suited up for her 13 games this season, she’s averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, and 5.0 rebounds. More importantly, the Fever have posted a solid 8-5 record in those matchups. Without her on the court, they’ve managed a 9-8 mark.

However, the statistical comparison only tells part of the story. Clark’s presence fundamentally changes how the Fever operate on both ends of the floor. Her deep shooting range stretches defenses beyond the three-point line, forcing opponents to guard her well beyond the arc. This creates more space for scorers like Kelsey Mitchell to operate and gives Aliyah Boston more room to work in the post without constant double teams.

Beyond the numbers, Clark’s high basketball IQ adds a level of poise and decision-making that becomes evident in crucial moments. She reads defenses quickly and makes the kind of plays that can swing momentum in tight games.

The recent loss to the Sparks highlighted some of the challenges the Fever face without their floor general. Indiana managed to grab a narrow one-point lead after the first quarter, but that would be the only time they held an advantage all night. By halftime, they found themselves trailing by 11 points. Despite showing flashes of their potential with a fourth-quarter surge, the comeback effort fell short.

Now the Fever must quickly regroup and refocus as they prepare to face the Phoenix Mercury on August 7 at PHX Arena. The question remains whether they can rediscover the magic from their five-game winning streak or if Clark’s continued absence will prove too significant to overcome against another tough opponent.
