Bizarre Scenes Unfold As Daniil Medvedev Abandons His Bags and Rackets After Late-Night Defeat to Alexei Popyrin at Canadian Open

Daniil Medvedev left fans puzzled at the 2025 Canadian Open after walking off court without his bag and racquets following a late-night loss to Alexei Popyrin.

Former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev turned an already disappointing loss into an unintentionally comedic moment at the 2025 Canadian Open. After falling to defending champion Alexei Popyrin in three sets, the Russian walked straight off the court — without his bag or racquets.

What should have been a routine post-match exit became the most memorable part of Thursday night’s action in Toronto.

What Happened When Daniil Medvedev Left Everything Behind?

The scene unfolded at the National Bank Open, where 2021 champion Medvedev faced defending titleholder Popyrin in a tightly contested three-set battle. The Russian won the first set 7-5 but couldn’t maintain the momentum, ultimately losing 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in a match that extended well past midnight.

As the players met at the net for the routine handshake, Medvedev made a beeline for the tunnel, without grabbing his gear. His tennis bag and racquets remained courtside while he disappeared into the locker room, leaving fans and commentators momentarily confused about what they’d just witnessed.

How Does This Loss Fit Into Medvedev’s Recent Struggles?

This absent-minded exit caps off a challenging period for the former US Open champion. Medvedev has openly discussed his tennis future amid a tough run of form that has included more losses than he’s accustomed to experiencing.

Since claiming the Italian Open in May 2023, the Russian has gone titleless despite reaching six finals, including the 2023 US Open and 2024 Australian Open. During recent interviews, the 2021 US Open champion also addressed his chances of winning another Grand Slam title.

Speaking to Khaleej Times after his campaign in Doha earlier this year, Medvedev acknowledged the reality of his current situation while maintaining confidence in his abilities.

“I see two points of view. One is, lately it’s been a little bit tough for me. You know, my level has dropped a little bit. I lost more matches than I generally do. So it’s the reality. And at the same time, I proved numerous times that when I play my best tennis, when in my best shape, I can beat anyone,” Medvedev said.

The Russian tennis star emphasized the need to work hard and regularly face more vigorous opponents to regain his form and improve his chances of securing another Major title.

“And that are my chances if I manage to come back to my form, I know I did that a little bit in Doha. I want to try to do it here (in Dubai). Then I have the chance of winning another Grand Slam or more. If I don’t, then it’s going to be tougher. So I just need to fight, work hard and try to beat some guys that are at the moment stronger than me,” he added.
