Carson Branstine Slams Electronic Line Calling After Controversial Moment During Canadian Open Defeat to Maria Sakkari

Carson Branstine was far from pleased with an electronic line call controversy during her Canadian Open match against Maria Sakkari.

Carson Branstine criticized the Electronic Line Calling at the Canadian Open after a controversial call was made during her defeat to Maria Sakkari in the first round of the WTA 1000 event. Branstine and Sakkari played out a tight contest which the Greek won 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

Carson Branstine Speaks Out on Electronic Line Call Controversy

During the first-round fixture between Branstine and Sakkari, the Greek hit a backhand that appeared to be out but the electronic line call did not make the call. Instead, the Canadian lost the point as she hit the ball outside the court, thinking that Sakkari’s ball was out.

A video of the incident was shared on X and Branstine later reshared it to criticize the call.

“They didn’t let me replay this, clear mistake by the electronic line call because I played the shot after…BRUH obviously I tried to play the shot, the damn thing didn’t call the ball out. What’s a girl supposed to do,” the 24-year-old wrote.

There have been a few controversies with the electronic line calling over the past month, most notably during Wimbledon, when Taylor Fritz and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova were on the receiving end of controversial calls.

Carson Branstine has mostly competed in ITF and WTA 125 events so far in 2025, and has played just four main-draw matches on the WTA Tour, winning just one. Before the ongoing Canadian Open, the 24-year-old competed at Wimbledon, losing to Aryna Sabalenka in the first round.

After Beating Carson Branstine, Maria Sakkari Will Face Jessica Pegula in Canadian Open 2R

Maria Sakkari’s hard-fought win over Carson Branstine set up a second-round clash with two-time champion and third seed Jessica Pegula. The American, who entered the Canadian Open after a second-round exit at the Citi DC Open, received a bye to the second round in Montreal.

Pegula and Sakkari have locked horns 11 times previously, with the former leading their head-to-head 6-5. Their most recent encounter came in the second round of the Adelaide International, with the current World No. 4 recording a comprehensive 6-4, 6-1 win.

Whoever out of Pegula and Sakkari comes out on top, will face either 25th seed Magda Linette or Anastasia Sevastova in the third round of the Canadian Open.
