Florida QB DJ Lagway’s Health Concerns, Turnover Problems Spark Fresh Doubts About Gators’ SEC Rise

Despite DJ Lagway's talent and strong freshman season, health concerns and turnovers are fueling skepticism about Florida's SEC hopes in 2025.

DJ Lagway has all the tools to be a star, but the whispers are getting louder. Despite his breakout 2024 season, questions about the Florida quarterback are starting to pile up just as expectations reach fever pitch.

While Lagway’s talent is undeniable, recent commentary from analysts like On3’s JD PicKell at SEC Media Days suggests that Florida may be getting too much preseason hype, especially given concerns about Lagway’s health and turnover issues.

What Made DJ Lagway’s Freshman Season Both Special and Concerning?

Florida Gators QB DJ Lagway dazzled fans in 2024, playing in 12 games and starting seven of them. He posted a 6-1 record as a starter, tying Chris Leak for the most wins by a true freshman quarterback in Florida history.

He threw for 1,915 yards with 12 touchdowns and added over 100 rushing yards, while his 154.9 passer rating led all FBS true freshmen with at least 150 pass attempts.

However, the numbers don’t tell the full story. Lagway completed just under 60% of his passes (115-of-192) and tossed nine interceptions. While he proved capable of hitting deep throws, totaling 12 completions of 40-plus yards and earning a 95.8 passing grade on such attempts, ball security remains a critical issue.

As On3 college football analyst JD PicKell noted, “Turnovers, gotta cut down on those.”

Why Is JD PicKell Pumping the Brakes on Lagway and Florida’s Hype?

During a SEC Media Days 2025 interview with “That SEC Podcast,” On3 analyst JD PicKell praised Lagway’s upside but cautioned against overhyping Florida too soon.
“At the end of last year, he was awesome… arguably the best quarterback in the conference for that two-to-three-game stretch,” PicKell said. “But then you take a step back and you’re like, well, turnovers… and also, how healthy is DJ Lagway? I’m also worried about that.”

PicKell’s remarks highlight a growing sentiment among SEC insiders: the Gators are projecting success based on a limited sample size. The excitement surrounding Lagway is real, but Florida fans and perhaps even coaches are leaning on potential rather than proven consistency.

How Much Should DJ Lagway’s Health Concerns Worry Florida Gator Fans?

Lagway’s health status hasn’t been fully disclosed, but PicKell’s comments suggest there may be lingering concerns that haven’t made headlines. Given how vital Lagway is to Florida’s offensive hopes, any limitations, even minor ones, could derail the Gators’ push for a breakout year in a crowded SEC.

The Gators’ receiving corps also needs to improve. While there is optimism about the room’s talent, it lacks proven game-changers. That puts even more pressure on Lagway to make magic happen, and as a second-year player, that’s a tall order without dependable support.

The expectations surrounding Florida’s 2025 campaign are sky-high, thanks in large part to DJ Lagway’s pedigree. But just like new Texas QB1 Arch Manning, Lagway finds himself in the middle of a hype-versus-production debate. If he can stay healthy and reduce turnovers, he could become one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in college football.

Until then, doubts will remain, and rightly so. The Gators might be on the rise, but college football fans remain skeptical for now, especially in the SEC.
