With just one week until veteran preseason kicks off, the Pittsburgh Steelers might not be done making moves. After one of the most active offseasons in recent memory, Pittsburgh could still add another weapon to their arsenal.
Gabe Davis has been floating in free agency limbo all summer, but that could change soon. The 26-year-old receiver has caught the attention of three contenders who believe he still has something left in the tank.
Where Will Gabe Davis Land Before Training Camp Ends?
While big names like Amari Cooper and Keenan Allen dominate the free agent headlines, Davis quietly remains one of the most intriguing available options. His 2024 campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars turned into a nightmare, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.
Davis has already visited with Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and the New York Giants earlier this offseason. However, none of those meetings resulted in a contract. His brutal 2024 season clearly spooked potential suitors.
The numbers from Jacksonville paint a grim picture. Davis managed just 239 receiving yards and two touchdowns across 10 games, a massive disappointment after signing a $13 million per year deal. Press Taylor and Doug Pederson’s offensive system never clicked with the receiver’s skill set.
But that disastrous season doesn’t erase what Davis showed before arriving in Jacksonville. In a PFSN article, Jacob Infante broke down the receiver’s potential value, explaining how the right system could unlock his abilities.

“Davis is only 26 years old, so he should have plenty of football left in him, even after his injury. He would be best suited in an offense that allows him to maximize his vertical capabilities. That said, keep an eye on some playoff contenders to consider him on a discounted one-year deal before he signs another contract next offseason.”
How Would Davis Fit With Each Potential Suitor?
Each of the three teams pursuing Davis faces different roster challenges and timeline pressures.
Pittsburgh presents the most competitive situation for Davis. Behind DK Metcalf, the Steelers’ receiving corps includes Calvin Austin III and Robert Woods. That depth chart leaves room for Davis to carve out a meaningful role, but he’d need to prove himself during preseason battles.
Meanwhile, San Francisco offers the most immediate opportunity. Brandon Aiyuk is expected to miss the start of the 2024-25 campaign, creating an instant void in their receiving room. Adding to their urgency, Jauan Jennings is currently seeking a new contract or trade. Davis could step right into significant snaps during September.
The Giants’ situation presents more complexity from a scheme perspective. New York desperately needs more weapons to complement Malik Nabers, but the fit isn’t as clean. Darius Slayton recently signed an extension, yet Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt haven’t established themselves as reliable options. That uncertainty creates an opening Davis could exploit.

Davis remains undervalued across the league, but his age works in his favor. At 26, he’s still in his prime years despite the Jacksonville setback. His 2022 breakout season proved he can produce at a high level when everything aligns.
The receiver is unlikely to develop into a true number one option, but teams don’t need him to fill that role. With minimal financial risk and clear interest from playoff-caliber franchises, Davis just needs the right opportunity to resurrect his career trajectory.
