Chargers Predicted To Bolster Justin Herbert’s Offense by Trading for 19-TD TE Ahead of 2025 Season

While many call for a reunion with Keenan Allen, one report says the Los Angeles Chargers should consider an upgrade at the tight end position.

As the Los Angeles Chargers prepare for their second full season under head coach Jim Harbaugh, the team is expected to continue relying on their physical, ball-control offense, centered around quarterback Justin Herbert and a versatile supporting cast.

Los Angeles Chargers Linked to Starting Tight End Cole Kmet

Much of the offseason has focused on reinforcing the run game and bringing in playmakers who can thrive in offensive coordinator Greg Roman’s scheme. However, the Chargers’ passing-game options are severely limited after Mike Williams’ recent retirement.

Wide receiver Ladd McConkey broke out last season, hauling in 82 receptions for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns during his rookie campaign. After Williams’ sudden retirement, the Chargers are relying on either the inconsistent Quentin Johnston or rookie Tre Harris to emerge as Herbert’s second option.

While many Charger fans are advocating for the re-signing of long-time wide receiver Keenan Allen, one report suggests that the team should instead consider an upgrade at the tight end position. According to Jordan Omalley of AOL Sports, the Chargers should reach out to the Chicago Bears to discuss the availability of tight end Cole Kmet.

“Kmet is fresh off a career-best six touchdowns in 2024, but still lost his long-term starting role when the Bears drafted Colston Loveland,” noted Omalley. “The Chargers, transitioning under Roman, need a tight end who can block and catch, and pairing him with Herbert could quietly become one of the league’s better connections.”

Kmet, 26, has accumulated 2,592 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns over five seasons. With the Bears drafting Michigan standout Loveland in the first round, speculation around Kmet’s future in Chicago has intensified.

For Los Angeles, the financial and strategic fit is clear. Kmet’s $11.6 million cap hit is manageable, and his ability to line up as an in-line blocker, slot receiver, or wide threat makes him an ideal fit in Roman’s multi-tight end formations.

Adding Kmet would provide the Chargers with a significant upgrade over their current tight end options. While veterans Will Dissly and Tyler Conklin offer reliability and solid blocking, neither brings the combination of size, hands, and route versatility that Kmet does. His ability to stretch the seam, win contested catches, and function as a true TE1 would immediately elevate Los Angeles’ passing game.

In Roman’s system, which thrives on tight end involvement, Kmet’s skill set could unlock new dimensions for Herbert and provide the kind of dynamic threat the Chargers have lacked at the position. Now, they just need the Bears to agree to a trade.
