Analyst Predicts Dallas Cowboys Micah Parsons’ Contract Will Shatter T.J. Watt’s

When Pittsburgh Steelers OLB T.J. Watt inked his three-year, $123 million extension, you could almost hear a clock in Dallas start to tick.

From the moment the Cowboys selected Parsons with the 12th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, they hoped that he’d provide a pass rush threat that would change the landscape of their pass rush. To his credit, the former Penn State standout did his job.

In 63 games, the four-time Pro Bowler tallied 52.5 sacks and nine forced fumbles. Parsons is an elite rusher, blending speed with flexibility and explosion. As a result, the Cowboys can send him between the tackles or around the corner.

Parsons can win while standing up or with his hand in the dirt. Now, he wants a deal that reflects both what he’s done and what’s still ahead. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio said the Cowboys need to back up the Brinks truck.

“The question is whether Parsons will set the new standard by a little or by a lot. Will he get $41.1 million? $42 million? $45 million? More? Our guess is it’ll be closer to $45 million, if not more than that. He’s well younger than the edge rushers who have gotten to the $40 million mark (Watt and Myles Garrett). And, again, the longer the Cowboys wait, the more expensive the final deal likely will be.”

Florio hits the target with this quote in various parts. First, Parsons turned 26 on May 26, making him five years younger than Watt and four years younger than Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett.

Under those circumstances, the Cowboys believe that Parsons’ best football is still to come. Locking him down at an estimated $45 million for the next five or six years means that while the money will set a record now, it will become the average when it expires.

With Parsons’ proposed deal, the Cowboys cannot rely on him to provide all of the pass rush. Drafting a few mid-round talents to bring balance at an affordable cost makes the defense better.

They believe that linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, drafted in 2023, can give him a burst from the other side. Either way, building a defense around Parsons means constructing a complete unit. Meanwhile, when Parsons does sign the contract, can he live up to it?
