How Is Leylah Fernandez Preparing for Her Next WTA Tour Stop?

The 2025 season has been rather underwhelming by Fernandez’s standards. A few bright spots included quarterfinal appearances in Abu Dhabi and Nottingham, but the year was largely defined by a string of early exits in Adelaide, Dubai, Indian Wells, Madrid, the French Open in Paris, and Queen’s Club.

However, her struggles continued in her recent outings on grass. She began with a first-round exit at the Queen’s Club Championships but showed some promise by reaching the quarterfinals in Nottingham. That momentum was short-lived, as she bowed out in the second round at both the Bad Homburg Open and the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.

Despite these recent setbacks, the World No. 35 will be looking to turn things around during the upcoming North American hard-court swing, hoping for a solid lead-up to the season’s final Major, the US Open. Up next for Fernandez is the WTA 500 event in Washington, starting from July 21, and the Canadian has already begun preparing for it.

Fernandez recently took to her Instagram stories to share a few glimpses of her current routine. The first featured a snapshot from a practice session on the tennis courts she called ‘home.’ In another story, she shared a hyperlapse video of herself packing for her next stop on the WTA tour. The 22-year-old revealed in the following clip that she was next headed to Washington, D.C.

Fernandez last appeared at the Citi DC Open in 2023, where she came through qualifying with wins over Varvara Gracheva and Katie Boulter. In the main draw, she defeated Bernarda Pera in the opening round before falling to eventual runner-up Maria Sakkari in the second round.

How Did Leylah Fernandez Spend Her Recent Downtime?

Following an underwhelming grass-court swing, the Canadian took some time off to unwind, traveling to Marbella in Málaga, Spain. Fernandez shared a few photos and a video of herself trying out water sports. She also added a caption indicating that the hard-court swing would be her next focus.

“Ending the European season with a splash 🌊 Next stop: back to the States for the hard court swing!!” Fernandez captioned her Instagram post.

Alongside Fernandez, a formidable lineup is set to compete at the WTA 500 hard-court tournament in Washington. Top names such as Elena Rybakina, Emma Raducanu, Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro are also expected to participate.
