A Caitlin Clark jersey-wearing fan thought he could get under Saniya Rivers’ skin Tuesday night. Instead, he got a one-way ticket to the parking lot and gave Rivers the last laugh. What started as concerning reports of inappropriate contact turned into something much simpler: a loudmouth who couldn’t keep his comments to himself.
What Really Happened Between Rivers and the Ejected Fan?
The drama unfolded with 6:34 left in the second quarter when Rivers faced insensitive remarks from an Indiana Fever fan wearing Clark’s jersey. Security quickly escorted the fan out of TD Garden after Rivers complained to the referees.
Initial reports suggested the fan inappropriately touched Rivers, but that wasn’t the case. The 22-year-old forward set the record straight after the game, clarifying there was no physical interaction involved.
“Update via Saniya Rivers: The ejected fan did NOT touch her, he made a comment that warranted ejection. Rivers was in great spirits about it, joked that he wasted all that money on a seat just to get tossed,” Suns reporter Emily Adams wrote on X.

Despite Rivers’ claim that the incident didn’t bother her, her performance tells a different story. Before the ejection, Rivers had a strong game with 6 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals in the first half. By game’s end, her stat line read 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.
How Did Clark Perform Despite the Surrounding Drama?
The Fever won 85-77 in a game that stayed close through three quarters, with Indiana holding a slim 62-60 advantage. Clark had a dismal outing overall, finishing with 14 points on 4-of-14 shooting and 1-of-7 from behind the arc, plus 7 assists.
However, Clark impressed in the final quarter, scoring 9 of her 14 points to steal the win for the Fever. She faced huge defensive pressure throughout the game, including full-court presses and double teams. Clark left the game in the waning moments of the final quarter due to an apparent groin injury that had already forced her to miss multiple WNBA games and the Commissioner’s Cup final.
The history between these teams runs deep. When the Fever and Sun matched up last month, Clark was on the receiving end of hard fouls by Jacey Sheldon and Marina Mabrey. Sheldon poked Clark in the eye while Mabrey shoved her midway through the third quarter.
Clark, Mabrey, and Tina Charles received technical fouls for the incident, while Sheldon’s foul was upgraded to flagrant 1. After the game, the WNBA reassessed Mabrey’s foul, upgrading it to a flagrant 2. Possibly in retaliation, the Fever’s Sophie Cunningham committed a hard foul on Sheldon with under a minute left in the game. Cunningham was ejected for the foul, which was assessed as flagrant 2.
What Does Rivers Think About Clark as a Competitor?
Despite the heated moments between their teams, Rivers doesn’t have any ill will toward Clark. “Caitlin Clark is a dog,” Rivers said before the game. “Like she’s Caitlin is going to be Caitlin. So you can always expect something to go down because we’re competitors, you know, she’s competitive as well. Win, lose, or draw, we’re going to come out here and put on a good show for everybody.”
With the victory over the Sun, the Fever sits sixth on the points table. Next, Clark and the Fever have two matchups against the New York Liberty. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the table, the Sun will take on the Los Angeles Sparks next.
