Tennis legend-turned-broadcaster John McEnroe is once again at the center of controversy after mispronouncing the name of Italian tennis player Flavio Cobolli during a courtside segment at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.
McEnroe allegedly referred to the World No. 24 as “Flavio Cobelly,” a mistake that did not go unnoticed by viewers, many of whom expressed their frustration with what they described as a lack of professionalism from the veteran commentator.
Growing Criticism Over John McEnroe’s Commentary Style
McEnroe’s tennis commentary has faced growing criticism over the years. Many viewers and players feel he often lacks preparation, particularly when discussing lower-ranked or lesser-known players, sometimes admitting he doesn’t know who they are. He’s also been reportedly accused of showing favoritism toward top players while dismissing underdogs.
The moment occurred during one of the BBC’s Wimbledon broadcasts, where McEnroe was covering a fourth-round match involving Novak Djokovic and Alex de Minaur on Center Court, where the Serb came out on top.
When introducing Djokovic’s upcoming quarterfinal opponent, 22nd seed Flavio Cobolli, McEnroe repeatedly mispronounced his name as “Flavio Cobelly.”
A clip from the segment began circulating online shortly after the broadcast, and the mistake was not taken lightly by fans, who felt it was emblematic of a broader issue. “He literally never knows ANYTHING about ANYONE he’s commenting on,” one fan posted. “Not how to say their names even. He’s by far the worst caster in the sport right now.”

Others pointed out factual inaccuracies in his commentary, including one instance during a Marin Cilic match when McEnroe incorrectly claimed that Cilic had defeated Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, a match that never happened.
During Cilic’s match, McEnroe said Cilic had beaten Nadal at Wimbledon. Cilic and Nadal never played at Wimbledon.

Others went further, calling for McEnroe to step away from the commentator’s booth entirely. “This guy needed to retire ages ago. He always, always disappoints,” one user posted.
Another wrote, “It’s like he doesn’t watch tennis, yet they give him a microphone.”
