Jim Courier Reflects on Amanda Anisimova’s Emotional Wimbledon 4R Triumph

Anisimova put in a determined performance on No. 1 Court on Sunday evening, defeating Noskova to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals. The American looked dominant from the outset, taking the first set 6-2, but the Czech responded strongly, edging the second set 7-5. Despite trailing 1-3 in the decider, Anisimova rallied to take it 6-4 and book her place in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

American legend Courier later spoke about her performance on Tennis Channel, recalling how Anisimova made waves in Paris in 2019, took time off due to emotional turmoil, and is now thriving at Wimbledon.

“She burst onto the scene as the semifinalist at Roland Garros. Young woman playing the sport and then life intervenes. She has some real stuff, that happened. Her father passed away, took some time away to regroup, and now she is on the verge of making another semifinal here against Pavlyuchenkova,” he said.

Notably, 2019 was a bittersweet year for Anisimova. She burst onto the scene with a semifinal run at the French Open, but also faced a heartbreaking tragedy with the sudden passing of her father due to a heart attack.

Furthermore, following her quarterfinal run at Wimbledon 2022, the American hit a rough patch, failing to win consecutive matches in any of the 10 tournaments she played. The series of setbacks took a toll on Anisimova’s psyche, as she stepped away from the sport the following year due to burnout and mental health concerns.

The 23-year-old was seen in tears after securing her spot in the quarterfinals. Courier believes the milestone carried deeper meaning for her, especially after overcoming a stretch marked by emotional turmoil.

“That’s a winnable match for her, but you can see it means more now than it did then. She was innocent, when she first burst on. She’s had the real world come up and give her, you know, a real dose. So it’s going to be a deeper in meaning for her. And sometimes it’s harder when it means more like this to overcome that scar tissue that you’re carrying. So that’s why I think why she was crying after the win. That’s a massive moment for her. Really happy for her,” he added.

With her entry into the quarterfinals, the American has risen to No. 8 in the WTA live rankings, and it remains to be seen whether she can build on that by pushing further into the final stages at SW19.

Amanda Anisimova Will Face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Wimbledon QF

Anisimova will next face Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Jul 8. The Russian defeated the home favorite, Sonay Kartal, 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the fourth round on Sunday to reach the last eight.

Anisimova enters the match with a psychological advantage, having won all three of her previous encounters against Pavlyuchenkova. The 23-year-old is now just a win away from reaching her second Grand Slam semifinal, her first since the 2019 French Open, where she lost to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty.
